I came up with this idea recently.

Bedrock Tunnel Cards

This adds Bedrock to the game. Bedrock is very hard rock. These cards works like regular tunnel cards, with one exception. They can't be destroyed by the Tunnel Collapse Cards. Once revealed, they are fixed in their position.

There are five of these Bedrock Tunnel Cards in total. The cards looks like black/dark rock where the other tunnel cards are gray rock. So you can easily see the difference between the regular tunnel cards and the bedrock tunnel cards.

The five cards are:

+-------+ +-------+ +-------+ +-------+ +-------+
| # | | # | | # | | # | | # |
| # | | # | | # | | | | # |
| ###| |### | |#######| |# #| |## ##|
| | | | | # | | | | # |
| | | | | # | | # | | # |
+-------+ +-------+ +-------+ +-------+ +-------+

So we have two bends tunnels, a crossing tunnel, a dead-end crossing, a double bend tunnel

You shuffle the bedrock tunnel cards separately from the other tunnel cards each round and then place them randomly upside down on the playing field on their fixed locations.

The fixed locations be laid down in different formations. See the examples below.

LEGEND: BRCARD = Bedrock Tunnel Card Location

You can reveal a Bedrock Tunnel Card by placing a tunnel card next to it. If you are the first player, you may reveal the card and place (and rotate) as you like (just like as with goal cards). From that moment the card is solid and fixed in that location and can't be changed until the round finishes.

You can also use a Treasure Map action card to check these Bedrock Tunnel Cards so you may learn from it if you can use this card in your advantage or not.

----------------------------------------------------------

I must admit that i haven't playtested this yet, but i think this can be a cool addition to the game. I hope you like it.

So we're surveying the mine (before we dig through it now (to know where bedrock is ahead of starting)?

I like your idea very much.

In the meantime, I've made the files to play it and uploaded them on BGG.
They will be available in a few days.

One small change: I would suggest to place the bedrock cards in a V shape in regard to the Start card.

Great!

Like i said. I haven't tested the idea yet. Change the shape from /\ to V might be more challenging. Another option might be a W shape. Or perhaps a + shape. I've added these formations to the startpost.

These shapes could be presented like playfield versions, i think. So people have a choice what they would like to play.

This is a brilliant idea, V seems like the most logical layout as otherwise it could be a challenge as you get closer to the goal cards (and more bedrock) and would probably be easier to build around the bedrock than to deal with it.

You could probably play this with the normal deck just by pulling out the relevant cards and then marking them with a token of some sort.

I've uploaded a new file with these additions.

Yes, i think that this idea works with the original Saboteur deck as well. I don't it's needed to replace some cards. Adding these 5 cards should be enough.
