I didn't see anything in the forums or rulebook. Is it doable? Have others tried it?

I've watched it played multi-player (with 4) at my FLGS. It's doable. Each player has a fleet of a certain number of points and is responsible for controlling their ships. The VP's are won as a team however. There are no rules specific to multi-player so you can pretty much create any house rules you want.

As long as it is two teams, I couldn't see an issue. I wouldn't try a three way battle, as it just wouldn't make sense (for the system or the setting).

I was thinking about running a group through a scenario battle, where one player from each team would have their ships "arrive" first, but would be limited to lighter ship types (representing scouting forces arriving first), and then have a second player from each team arrive as the main stike force. I haven't done it yet, but soon!

We played a 5 player game (300 points/side) last weekend. 2 1/2 turns took two hours. To speed up play I would suggest that each side have one player be the 'air commander', they have the carriers, escorts, and planes (keeping track of who controls which planes is a pain). If there are still points left over that player could also control the subs/pt boats or one big ship.
