One thing I've done for my copies of TS (as well as for the initiative card in Combat Commander: Europe) is put the China card in a sports card single case.

They're about $1. Well worth it for something that isn't part of your hand and needs to be passed back and forth face up or down.

Clear sleeves for the deck and an opaque red-backed sleeve for the China card works well for me.

Here´s a photo of my China Card (spanish edition)

I cut out a piece of plastic protector for documents and a premium sleeve. I put the card between the plastic protector, then the protector goes inside the sleeve.

It looks red front and back, no way it can get mixed.

I tried putting a different back on the China card, but then realized that sometimes I like to put the China Card into my hand, as I think about the order I will play the card.

Now it's just back to a sleeve like all the others, so it doesn't give away when/if it is going to be played.

I don't read the rules as allowing the China card to be placed in ones hand.

I'm not sure what that means. One player or the other has it. Putting it in one's hand or leaving it on the table is the same thing. (Except, of course, when it is face down).
