After the dragon is awakened, he must end his turn on a crystal tile to become surfaced. However, is he technically surfaced at the end of his turn or at the start of his next turn?

At the end of his turn.

Additionally, any enemy on the Surfacing tile gets a free attack (if they have sufficient strength to attack) as if the Dragon had entered the tile. Goblins still scatter when using this "free" attack, but Knights do not need an encounter.

How to distinguish an awakened Dragon from surfaced one? The rules tells to switch the miniature, but until you reach crystal, you're still below.

We must move forward, not backward, upward, not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!

you can use whatever method you like, but one easy way is to lay the awakened Dragon flat while still underground.

It's extremely rare for the Dragon to be awake and on the surface for more than one or two turns before he either wins or is killed, so as long as you announce to everyone that you've moved to the surface it shouldn't be an issue even if you don't do anything extra to mark it.

Not rules as written, but I typically keep using the "crouched dragon" figure until he's surfaced. TO me it feel right since he's still crawling around in tunnels, and you can mostly tell whether he's awakeby his stats. The only time this doesn't work is if the cave uses Soporific Spores at that particular moment (to move a wakefulness cube back, since you have to remember he's still awake), but at this point most people know you're awake since you're busy heading for a crystal.

That seems like a nice way to do it. Keeping it flat still shows it is underground, using a different mini shows it is already awake. Thanks.
