My House rules for battle:

To make the combat just a little bit less predictable for every Troop you commit to battle you get a dice that has 0, 1 or 2 result, if they are an elite troop (4 of each for Atreides, Emperor and Fremen) they have a special dice that has 1, 2 or 3, result. these are added up and the total plus Surviving leader number wins the battle.
loser loses all winner losses 1/2 of commuted troupes rounded up.

Also, artillery can be purchased 5 spice during reinforcement round, and used in any non-shielded area or were shields have been taken down through a sabotage card added to the treachery deck. Each dice has 0, 1, 2 the are rolled before the battle and Eliminate the number of troops if they hit.

also allow a karma card played after the battle for the losing side for his leader to narrowly escape the battle unless they were killed by the cards.

Isn't part of the point of the game that the battles *are* deterministic?

I know of no deterministic out come in any reality, why in dune??? there is always a chance for a smaller force to beat a larger one, the 1/2 recovery of the winning side also promotes a larger commitment of troops to the battle.

Having said all that it almost every time plays out the player that can defeat the leader wins like in the base game rules, the rolls are not a wide swing in numbers
