Our group has of 4 has found that game progresses too slow. We always play Total History and one session (6-8 hours) ends at the start of 4th age.

On the contrary, two player game is much faster.

On our next session we shall play with house rule that each player with at least one empire card MUST choose Trade and Progress option. If a player fails to comply with that, receives -3 glory penalty.

Any suggestions?

Possibly a good idea if you change it to at least two empire cards. I think constraining the action of a player with only one empire would make the game not as fun. Another option might be all the player with the most empires (and more than one) have to take the T&P action.

We toyed with using the cadence markers in reverse. So that empires selecting one action would always move forward, another action that would move forward if it had a sufficient trade number.

That hasn't been tried because our fourth moved away and we haven't played it four player since.
