Interaction between the barrier and companions was not defined in the rulebook.

Any thoughts? Allowing movement would give players incentive to save their companion to deal with barrier near end of the game (at the detriment of less flexibility during the game).

I don't have a definitive answer, but it's my guess that it blocks them as well, since all the other interaction rules affect them (must pay to use tiles occupied by other merchants/companions, gets paid for being on a tile that another merchant/companion wants to use, has encounters, etc.).

Short answer: yes!

It was implicitly defined in the phrase from the rules:

"The Companion follows the same rules as the Merchant"

Since the barrier is not one of the exceptions listed, it definitely applies to the Companion!
