I'm looking for a board game with teams / partners.

* 2 v 2, possibly higher numbers though.
* not looking for party type games like codenames, taboo.. etc.
* preferably not a war game but if so, no heavier than Memoir 44
* Some direct conflict would be nice.

These criteria are all nice to haves, any suggestions are welcome. Thank you for your ideas !

My wife and I quite enjoy playing Wolf & Hound with our various nieces and nephews. It's a quite light partnership card game with super adorable artwork.

A couple of others that are close to what you want:

Space Cadets: Dice Duel- plenty of conflict in a realtime battle between two teams, each controlling a ship.

Between Two Cities- fun tile-laying game where you work with your neighbors to build two cities, does not have direct conflict, though.

Depending on your definition of party, maybe Flick em up (dexterity game). You can also play X wing as a team game.

Mage Wars Arena + Mage Wars Arena: Battlegrounds Domination works well as a 2 vs. 2 or 3 vs. 3 (or free for all) game, but it may be more heavy than what you're looking for.

Cyclades + Cyclades: Titans also supports team play (2 vs. 2 or 3 vs. 3) in addition to free for all with 3-5 players.

If I were regularly playing 2v2, I would buy Goths Save The Queen. It seems like a fun game. Star Realms is a deckbuilder game that can be played 2v2, but perhaps only if your children are a bit older (10-12+).

How do you feel about co-ops? Forbidden Island, Forbidden Desert and Pandemic are great family games. On top of that, the Pandemic: In the Lab expansion comes with a team-play variant, which I enjoy a lot.

Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game : up to 2 zombies vs up to 4 heroes. Moderate/simple dice rolling and other random stuff - good "beer and pretzels" game.

Star Wars: Rebellion : designed as 1v1, but can be played 2v2. Complex.
On that note a lot of civ type games can be played as team games, if going for points, the end score is the average of the players in that team. This variant comes from Eclipse, but I see no reason to not apply it to any game that uses points to determine winners. Probably won't work so well with objective based games that aren't wargames.

Coup: Reformation
Coup with the Reformation expansion adds a team element that can constantly change. It still plays to last man (or woman) standing, but is light, quick and fun.

Captain Sonar Great with 6-8, and can also be played with fewer, but no longer real time. Direct conflict. REAL teamwork. Real time. Plays quick. Really fun.

Between Two Cities is excellent, but without conflict.

I recommend 1775: Rebellion and 1812: The Invasion of Canada. They are wargame-like, but at a less detailed, more abstract level.

1812 is for up to 5 players - 3 factions vs 2 factions. 1775 is for up to 4 players - 2 factions vs 2 factions. For fewer than the maximum number of players, 1 or more players play multiple factions.

I don't think it's available just yet. It's being released at SPIEL Essen.

2v2: Quartermaster General – Victory or Death: The Peloponnesian War
3v2: 1812: The Invasion of Canada

They are both war themed, but definitely lighter than Memoir.

As for quick fun, definitely Tichu
