Obama said that his operating theory was based on three premises. “No. 1 was, Cuba is a tiny, poor country that poses no genuine threat to the United States. No. 2, in this era of the Internet and global capital movements, is that openness is a more powerful change agent than isolation. That’s not always the case. There are unique circumstances, like North Korea, which is such a closed system that all you do there is reward those who are in power, and there’s no capacity to reach people.

“No. 3 was the belief that, if you are interested in promoting freedom, independence, civic space inside of Cuba, then the power of things like remittances to give individual Cubans some cash, even if the government was taking a cut, that then allowed them to start a barbershop, or a cab service, was going to be the engine whereby individual Cubans—not directed by the United States, not directed by the C.I.A., not through some grand conspiracy, but Cuban people—who now have their own little shop and have a little bit of savings can start expecting more.”

It's a great article that details a bit of the behind-the-scenes stuff that went on in the Administration.

Raul has seemingly made some moves toward democratization, and the Cuban people themselves have long understood that Castro's ideologies, imposed on them, are not working. They suffer the consequences of those policies daily. Yes, there may be people in high positions in the government that will want to propagate the status quo, with some new leader that will hold the banner, but I don't believe it will stick. The prospect of democracy is already looking better as the Cubans get a taste of it's freedoms, and if there is another Cuban Revolution, I suspect this time it will be to restore a democratic government, that wants to improve both political and economic relations with the U.S.A.

We should have lifted the sanctions on Cuba DECADES ago.

Remember how Reagan opposed sanctions against apartheid South Africa? Partly on the basis that it was better to engage with them as a way of changing their attitudes?

Well, Cuba was much closer to the US. Much smaller. Frankly, much less of a threat to their own population. That Reaganesque logic would have applied ten-fold to Cuba.

But Cuba was a left-wing oppressive regime. South Africa's was a white, right-wing repressive regime. Hence the difference.

Anyway, Obama made the right decision. There have been people in both the Democratic and Republican parties who have wanted to do this for a LONG time. But no administration before Obama's had the nerve to do it.

Oh and the US Chamber of Commerce is absolutely delighted. They've wanted back into Cuba for a long, long time.

Is the Castro regime a nice one? No, it's a shitty repressive little government. But THE UNITED STATES HAS NORMAL RELATIONS WITH MANY SHITTY REPRESSIVE LITTLE GOVERNMENTS. And some shitty repressive BIG governments, too. It's not an endorsement.

This must be the mechanism by which Biden ascends to the presidency. Trump will now drop out. Clinton will decide she will not run against anyone but the Donald. She will retire, and Biden will get the nod. Yeah, that's it.

You mean, like the way that Republicans admired and re-established ties with Red China?
