Last Sunday's 25SEPT16 "60 Minute" program (Part II in a series on the New Cold War) covered the
U.S.'s nuclear air arm. [The previous week's show covered submarine nuclear capability.] There are video links to these programs on the web if interested.

This past Sunday's program had a clip depicting a carboard and paper map wargame of the "next war" with Russia that I thought some of you may have interest.

It's a RAND produced wargame commissioned by the Pentagon. What is interesting is that it is not one of those computer-generated games, but a commercial-looking "hex & counter" wargame.

I have little to no experience with modern warfare games, so in-put/correction are welcomed.

Or the dreaded Soviet Russian armored divisions.

The actual RAND report can be found at

http://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR1253.html

And a game that is at least partly based on the RAND report is Putin Strikes: The Coming War for Eastern Europe which is available now.

I suspect the actual game played at RAND was homegrown, not a commercially available product. Unfortunately

I believe this was featured in Battles Magazine No. 11 as well. It was a great article. I'll have to check out the 60 Minutes Episode On Demand, thanks for the information.

Nice article.

According to Avalon Hill tradition Charles Roberts got the idea for using hexagon maps after a visit to RAND back in the day.

What's most important is that the counters have properly rounded corners!

Fareed Zakaria's program did a bit on this game as well, back in mid-February.

It is a home-grown product, made by people with many, varied and fond memories and experiences of hex-and-counter games.

Thanks for the post and the link. Wonder if Dunnigan or Mark Harmon consulted on that game. They have both done a lot with government and quasi-government simulations.

As the RAND spokesman said, this scenario looks pretty bad for NATO. Kind of makes you want to pull out those old Fulda Gap scenarios, doesn't it?
Wow! I remember SSI's old Reforger '88. Even that one was a bear to win (am I subconsciously thinking of the Russian bear--like the one MicroProse didn't use on the cover of Red Storm Rising?).

My apologies for going off-topic by talking about archaic PC games.

Dunnigan and Herman were not consulted.

I fear we are seeing a resurgence of the "Ten Foot Tall Ivan" Syndrome.

Amateurs study tactics, professionals study logistics; politicians study neither while lobbyists study psychology.

I was asked to comment on one of the games from my old stomping grounds. It misses the point...

Don't lobbyists study who has the bigger checkbook?

Sorry Mark, I should have added "AFAIK".
I am inclined to agree with you.

From another BGG thread, could the game shown be the one discussed here?

No, I asked RAND about that. They said no.
