It's an interesting week for doom and gloomers. Take your pick...

A black moon rises tomorrow night and evidently it's the end of the world (again). Why this particular black moon? Well... "The first day of September brought with it a ‘ring of fire’ solar eclipse – where the moon falls in line with the Earth and the sun above Africa, making it appear as if the sun had darkened." And now, on the last day of September, a BLACK MOON!!! Got it?

But perhaps you prefer your doom and gloom from science...

This article from Motherboard tells how we have reached the carbon tipping point, the event horizon, the point of no return. Why? Well... "...we’ve officially pushed atmospheric carbon levels past their dreaded 400 parts per million. Permanently." On the bright side, now that it's too late, feel free to go out and buy a hummer. Then, tear out its exhaust system and fill it with old school leaded gasoline. Finally, crank up the AC, drive out to a dairy farm and rev the engine for all it's worth to make all the cows fart in unison. It's the end of days ... enjoy it.

And in science vs superstition news...

Astrology might have begat astronomy but astronomers hate astrologists. In what some are perceiving as scientists messing with the heads of charlatans, NASA has changed the zodiac and and added a new sign: Ophiuchus. Of course NASA says they are just setting the record straight... “The constellations are different sizes and shapes, so the Sun spends different lengths of time lined up with each one,” they say. “The line from Earth through the Sun points to Virgo for 45 days, but it points to Scorpius for only seven days. To make a tidy match with their 12-month calendar, the Babylonians ignored the fact that the Sun actually moves through 13 constellations, not 12. Then they assigned each of those 12 constellations equal amounts of time. Besides the 12 familiar constellations of the zodiac, the Sun is also aligned with Ophiuchus for about 18 days each year.” Fair enough, but I'll bet the astronomers all had shit eating grins on their faces when they released the news. Here are the new star sign dates...

Capricorn January 20 – February 16

Aquarius February 16 – March 11

Pisces March 11 – April 18

Aries April 18 – May 13

Taurus May 13 – June 21

Gemini June 21 – July 20

Cancer July 20 – August 10

Leo August 10 – September 16

Virgo September 16 – October 30

Libra October 30 – November 23

Scorpio November 23 – November 29

Ophiuchus November 29 –December 17

Sagittarius December 17 – January 20

Yes, but it took that long for devotees of astrology to figure out how to pronounce Ophiuchus and post it on FaceBook.

Yeah, old news. Several years ago I was discussing astrology with some folks, and one mentions that it doesn't even have the sun in the right position.

I thought, surely not; that's like it's fundamental claim. So I pulled up a trusty sky watcher app (as one does), and sure enough, astrology's "the sun is in X constellation" is a total falsehood.

At some point thousands of years ago the sun was backgrounded by those constellations (as viewed from the Earth, of course) more or less during those dates of the year, but progression (of the equinoxes) happens, shifting things about 1 degree of arc every 72 years, and now it's as NASA says.

Those more invested in astrology will argue "tropical zodiac" which is claimed to be based on the seasons of Earth and not the stars (though not coincidentally they once lined up with them). Of course, that means that "astrology" isn't about the stars at all.
