I know, not everyone played in Band but if you did, what instrument did you play?

You can also post about orchestra, choir, rock bands, didgeridoo, banjo, etc....

We had Band, Jocks, Freaks, Punks, Wavers, Break Dancers, and D&D Nerds in High School.

I fell into only one of those categories.

I played independently in the occasional rock band and on my own. It's still actually my main hobby. Guitars, keyboards, bass, drums, mandolin, saxophone, used to sing, but I'm lousy at that compared to my instrumental abilities, so I prefer the sideman role.

guess you mean like the marchin band or something. not really a thing at schools in the UK
Only band I was in I played guitar, we played metal, emo and punk. our singer basically curled into a ball with the mic and screamed. we were pretty terrible when not playing covers

Orchestra geek here, violin from 4th - 7th grade, then switched to bass from 8th grade - college.

Also got an electric bass for my 16th birthday, and played in various rock bands from then until college, as well. Mostly at parties and bars, nothing major.

I progressed clarinet -> alto sax -> bari sax.
Got to hang out with the tuba and trombones, rocking those sweet bass lines.

Always helps to have matching cymbals. I hear they work better that way.

For me it was French horn in band, mellophone one year for marching band, but hated it so played electric bass in the pit for the rest of my marching band career.

I also played the French horn. Is there a pattern here? Still think it's a lovely sounding instrument, also one of the hardest brass instruments to play (or so I was told).

Oboe

And for marching band, because you can't march with the oboe:
Marimba (side lines)
Tuba

Update: Dianne (thinks she wins over Pete)

Funny...we had oboe players marching in my high school...

Pete (recalls that we were more of a "walking band," lacking any true ability to march and play at the same time)

There are a few instruments geekier than the tuba, but the baritone ain't one of them!

Pete (thinks you look way cooler carrying a minituba than a big honking oom-pah machine)

Marching with an oboe sounds like it would be awful! And probably sound awful, too, since (I think) most of the tuning comes from the embouchure. Probably even worse than marching with a French horn.

And yeah, there's a big difference in parade marching and show marching.

I was (and still am) a percussionist. Did symphonic band in high school, and symphonic and orchestra at music camp. I've taught marching band lines at the high school level, and I've played in college, WGI, PAS, and DCI lines.

Kind of retired now unless I come in as a favor for the current instructor.
