I'm trying to decide between the two, and both are about the same price. I play mostly with my wife and we love Agricola, Castles of Burgundy, Keyflower, Roll for the Galaxy and the like. We also like variability and replayability. I just want to make sure I get a game that plays just as wonderfully at two as with more. Also, feel free to make any other suggestions.

FYI: I've also played Troyes, but didn't like it much.

Thanks for the help!

We really like Tzolkin with 2, and with more.

Really? I thought that I needed to get a certain map for it to be good with 2.

Both are good with 2. Caylus is arguably better with 2 than with more. Tzolkin requires using dummy pieces blocking spaces, so the 2 (or 3) player versions feel a little artificial, and I think it's definitely best with 4. Vying for the god tracks is much less interesting with 2. For variation, Tzolkin wins hand-down, with the variable starting resources, and the expansion adds more variability. In Caylus, except for variability in the sequence of starting buildings which has minor significance, it's the same every game. I love Caylus a little more, but among most players I know, Tzolkin seems more popular. Tzolkin, without the expansion, is a little weakened by having one pretty dominant strategy if the other players don't directly try to mess with you. I'm not going to say what it is, but I purposefully don't pursue this strategy with my wife or it makes the game unfun for both of us.

You can go to a game's page and then look at the player count breakdown to see how people have voted for how well it plays across player counts.

I'm a little surprised at all the love for Tzolk'in here. To me, it is a good, but not exceptional game - unlike Caylus which I consider amazing, also at 2 players.

I would definitely say Caylus for two players, and perhaps for any count.

Tzolk'in also playes really well with 2 players. Both Tzolk'in and Caylus are in the top 30 games according to BGG so you can't go wrong whichever you choose.

I much prefer to play Caylus over Tzolkin.

But at 2 players, i'd play Tzolkin as Caylus feels a bit off at only 2 players. It shines at 3 or 4.

Where Tzolkin is more multi-player solitaire in essence so playing 2 to 4 doesn't change the game much. The dummy pawns in Tzolkin have a very similar impact than other "real" players.

Board Game Bliss has it in stock (German edition) almost all the time. I just checked and it's sold out but if you keep an eye on their re-stocks section it will be back soon. They also have a lot of harder to find stuff and they do ship to the US.

That's one thing I like about Tzolk'in, many other euros rely on the players taking it in turns to control a dummy player when playing 2 player which doesn't appeal to me.

Tzolkin would be my pick for 2 players.

Both get better the more players to me.

You can play both on boardgamearena and find out yourself.

Thanks for all the help everyone! Unfortunately I still couldn't decide between the two. So I thought about it and realized that I already have many of the same old euro strategy tropes, so I decided to go in different direction. I purchased Argent: The Consortium. I'm not huge on the artwork, but the combo of playing great with two, and worker placement with high interaction in the form of player powers and spells really excites me! Anyone who wants to encourage my choice or tell me I'm an idiot feel free!

To be fair, I would have picked something different for 2-players as well.

Caylus with two is very good. But it's much, much heavier than Caylus with higher numbers.

I really dislike the Tzolk'in blocker method of playing under 4, but that's just my quirk.
