Edit: 12 December: Now Contest Ready (version 2)
Edit 11 October: Files now available at: Elemintary PnP
A memory game for 1 player (and maybe 2 co-op)
Age 8+
Playing time: approx 5 - 20 minutes
An unsavoury crime has been committed in Mintsby and you, the amateur sleuth Sherbet Holmes, aided by your dear friend Dr Winegum, are charged with solving the case.
You must move around the randomly generated playing area, search locations and memorise the suspects you encounter.
For, when you have eliminated the innocent, whoever remains, however improbable, must be the culprit.
A glance at your pocket watch shows you only have 12 hours remaining. Come, Winegum, the game is afoot...
Components:
- 14 Suspect cards/tiles (square)
-1216ActionEvent card/tiles (square)
- 2 differently coloured player cubes/tokens
- 1 Pocket Watch card with cube/token to track time
- 1 Reputation card with token to track
- 2 regular dice
- 1 rule sheet/booklet
All fitting in a mint tin.
Done list:
Playtest with some very roughly sketched cards.
Create a logo.
Come up with some sweet based puns for the characters.

(no joy to date looking in local shops)Ordered one online and receivedMore playtestingEven more playtesting, now that I've created some different 'cases'Create some proper artwork.Artwork doneMake components ready files availableFiles now available

I also found a plain tin on ebay, so may go for that one, as it will be easier to label.

Re: [WIP] 'Elemintary' - 2016 Mint Tin Design Contest - Idea phase
I've now done a few of the tiles:
The game is basically a take on a 'find the pairs' memory game. Find the pair of tiles of a suspect to eliminate them from your enquiries.
However, there are also other tiles which can help or hinder your investigation.
And you must solve the case against the clock.
Dice are used to move to and from locations so your choice of where to search may be restricted - fortunately Dr Winegum is there to help you.

Ditto! Looking forward to playtest.
Most of the cards designed.
Need to do rules sheet/booklet and then check everything fits in the tin!
Aiming for the weekend to upload files.
I had to include...

Re: [WIP] 'Elemintary' - 2016 Mint Tin Design Contest - Idea phase
Having failed to find an Altoids tin anywhere near me, I ordered one (plain silver) on ebay and it finally arrived yesterday.
I made a lid label for it:
I'd already got all the artwork and rules done, and printed and cut everything out:
So I was pleased to see that all the components fitted into the tin no problem:
I'll now do pdf files to upload.
The components only occupy 2 sheets and the rules 1 sheet.
I've done the rules as concertina folded and also as a PocketMod version.
I'll also do everything in black and white for a low ink version.

Re: [WIP] 'Elemintary' - 2016 Mint Tin Design Contest - Component Ready
Okay - files are now uploaded.
You may notice in the middle photo above that the Pocket Watch card has a moveable hour hand. You can track the time with a token/cube but I've also included this hour hand on the component sheet. So, if you have a split pin paper fastener, you can make a 'working' watch if you prefer.
It has struck me that, with my memory not being what it used to be, I am not the ideal person to play test this game. So I hope some of you will give it a go and let me know your thoughts.
Full colour and black & white version (probably more difficult precisely because there is no colour) available at: Elemintary PnP

Re: [WIP] 'Elemintary' - 2016 Mint Tin Design Contest - Component ReadyThis is dastardly indeed. Memorizing the cards is hard enough, but every time I think the game is under control I have to plot the movement and I FORGET everything. My brain hurst. Best score so far = two.

It occurred to me that it may be possible to play the game as a 2 player co-op.
Either with a (younger?) person helping you to remember things (each player taking it in turn to move Holmes).
Or with each player having their own token (one as Holmes, the other as Winegum) - in which case the Winegum rule would be omitted.
Playing the game solo, I have been unable to test this.

Re: [WIP] 'Elemintary' - 2016 Mint Tin Design Contest - Component ReadyI could give it a go with my hubby - I'll read the rules and see if it makes sense or not with your comments!

Re: [WIP] 'Elemintary' - 2016 Mint Tin Design Contest - Component ReadyFelt like challenging my memory again. Got through Case 1 easily this time, then set up Case 2, only to find I was holding an extra card. I think you need to remove 3 random evidence cards, not 2, for Case 2.

There are 30 cards. You remove one of the the suspect cards as the Culprit.
Then, for case 2, you remove 2 Evidence cards (case 1 and 3) and 2 other random event cards. That leaves 25 cards for your 5 x 5 grid (the layout for case 2)

In your variant, all suspects would have been eliminated from enquiries and the crime would have remained unsolved.

Re: [WIP] 'Elemintary' - 2016 Mint Tin Design Contest - Component ReadyHi Mark,
Just playing it for the first time now and typing notes as I go along.
Firstly, the rules: page numbers would be helpful! I was expecting to read it in a different order than it is laid out which gave me a few seconds of head scratching. I would expect to read it from top to bottom then left to right rather than left to right then top to bottom - hopefully that makes sense?
By regular dice I assume you mean 2 d6?
A little graphic in the rules showing what an event and suspect tile looks like would be nice although not essential - I'm assuming this can be indicated on the back of the tiles and then just use iconography.
I assume you should shuffle the suspects and event tiles before removing any of them?
Unreliable witness: should perhaps say 'diagonal opposite' for clarity.
A player aid with list of suspects would be useful for accusing.
Search warrant: can I then do a second search using the second die? I'm assuming not?
Tampered Evidence: I assume this means all those with a cast-iron alibi?
Follow up a lead: what if it is an event? is it just immediately replaced face down like for a failed questioning?
If I used my first die move to move onto an already revealed suspect with a cast-iron alibi, can I then use my second die to move again? This was the only way I could get to the final unrevealed tile so this is what I did!
I won at 11 o'clock: It was Al Toyds!!
However, I did feel that there were perhaps a few too many events. I'd prefer the balance to be more towards suspects than events. Also perhaps more interesting events that mixed the tiles up a bit more rather than resetting the time - that just makes me feel a little cheated, particularly as an event is essentially miss a go anyway (assuming it's the first card you land on which is fairly likely).
All in all a fun little game and beautiful graphics
