For those not able to attend Essen 2016, I thoroughly recommend:

EPSOM GAMES CLUB
GAME PLAYING DAY

Saturday 15 October 2016
from 10:00 until
18:00

We will be using our normal Games Days venue of:

St Mary's Church Hall, London Road, EWELL, KT17 2AY.

It is opposite the church - hopefully you can't miss that - and the hall looks like this:

http://www.stmarysewell.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/DSC08...

ADMISSION COST?

To help pay for the cost of the hire of the hall and the use of its catering facilities, there is a charge;

£5 for the day - £3 for half (or less) of the day

ADMISSION IS FREE FOR THE UNWAGED and also for anyones first visit.

Please post below any questions about attending or letting us know you will be coming along on the day.

And please use the Geeklist on this link to suggest and discuss games you would like to play on the day.

Look forward to seeing you there.

WHAT NORMALLY GETS PLAYED AT EGC?

We use an open gaming format although more recently there has been an ever increasing playing of games where the theme is important/stronger, including ancient Rome, science fiction, fantasy, and horror (not necessarily all at the same time shake ).

We also play "Euro style" games, from those at the lighter end of the gaming spectrum through to those that will melt your ear-wax if not your brain!

Some attendees use the day to organise and play some of the longer (time wise) games in their collections, especially some of the war games or 18xx games.

So all in all, a mixed bag and probably something for everyone.

Most people tend to bring several quite a few of their games along with them to offer a wide choice of options of games to play (choosing a game to play is often the hardest part of the day!), but please feel free to bring along any of your games you would like to play. Or use the link above to measure support for a particular game that you would like to play.

Details about who played what games on the last Games Day can be found here.

WHO WILL BE THERE?

This event is open to anyone of any age who appreciates playing board and card games but we do ask that all children are accompanied by an adult who has beaten them in at least one game recently! laugh

We typically get somewhere between a dozen to twenty people attending but can comfortably fit some more into the space available. Attendees vary in age from pre-teen to 60+ years young, and we are fortunate enough to have had a few women players from time to time, so we are not all "middle aged, bearded geeks"! shake)

If this sounds like fun, but you think you may not know the games that will be on offer to play do not worry; people are always prepared to teach games - in fact, many of us are more than happy to be told the rules rather than read them anyway! whistle

And we are very friendly and welcoming, so don't worry about being "new" and "not knowing anybody". Most of the now regular attendees did not know each other before the club started!

OK, I'M INTERESTED IN ATTENDING, BUT HOW DO I GET THERE?

There is no parking on site but there is usually plenty of on-street parking opposite the hall or in the nearby streets.

It's about fifteen minutes walk from Ewell West railway station and a little further from Ewell East.

The nearest bus stop (a few minutes walk) is the one called "the Spring" on London Road; buses 293, 406 and 467 stop there.

There is wheelchair access at the venue and you will also get to see what passes for the garden!

A BIT ABOUT THE VENUE, FOOD AND DRINKS

Good lighting, plenty of tables, ample kitchen including use of all the facilities - a microwave, cooker, refrigerator, dishwasher, lots of crockery, cutlery and glassware. Tea, coffee and squash are all available at a very nominal charge.

There is a new "Village Pizza" shop opened on Ewell Bypass (Russell's wife says it's the best pizza she's ever had) and a nearby fish and chip shop open all day that gets a great deal of custom from us (fish is good, chips not bad, pies fair, sausages best avoided!)

There's also a Sainsburys local about 10 minutes walk away and some sandwich shops between the hall and Sainsburys.

And there is a nearby pub - the Spring - a couple of doors down for people who would like a lunchtime pint (and they do nice food but they can be busy and therefore slow if you want to eat there).

Or you can just bring some food and drink with you which is what many people do! shake

AND JUST WHAT IS "EPSOM GAMES CLUB"?

Epsom Games Club was formed just over five-and-a-half years ago and has a well attended Thursday evenings club in Epsom. We are fortunate enough to have a few people who like to buy/collect games so there is a slight "cult of the new" (means we often get to try games before we buy them ourselves whistle).

And because many of us think that four hours an evening once a week is insufficient for our game playing needs, that we hold a Games Day (typically) on the third Saturday of each month.

Our Games Day was relocated due to our previous free-to-use venue in Epsom suddenly closing and the Ewell hall was best in terms of free parking, hire cost and local amenities.

This will be our seventy-second Games Day.

Check out our BGG Guild page: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/guild/929

LAST THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS

Because we want to be "responsible customers", we do our best to leave venue on time as well as cleaner and tidier than we arrived, so if you can collapse your table and stack it away along with the chairs as you leave, that would be much appreciated, as would finishing before rather than just after 18:00. shake

This sounds interesting a near group. I generally play at home with a few friends as walking is problematical for me.
I also have a few games that dont get to be played enough if people were interested. Swords and bagpipes; Talon; SE4X; Above and below; Islebound. A number of wargames.

My vision isnt great tho.. cant get out in evenings as no night sight (too much laser blatting of my eyes) but daytime might be ok if anyone was interested.

Hi Jef,

Thanks for posting.

Good to know we have another gamer nearby, albeit you are another "smiter" (what I call wargamers or those who like conflict in their games - can you tell I am not one? whistle).

But what I read in your post was that you are requesting some fellow smiters to drop you a note to arrange to come and play games at your place rather than you come along to the Games Day?

If so, I think you will have more success on our main BGG Guild Page (https://boardgamegeek.com/guild/929) than in this thread - we have quite a few members, many who do not come to the Games Days.

I will be there, hopefully a little earlier than last time!

Josh is coming along too(even if a certain "Klingon scum" cannot make it....) and his friends Ollie (who came along last month), Peter (who attended in August) and Jackson (who has been enrolled in coming along because of the fave reviews of the others).

I imagine that they will want to do a fair bit of "smiting" rather than the "fluffy cube pushers" I like...

Hi Jeff - one of Jim's 'smiters' here - Talon is a terrific game based on my brief try of it.

Actually i may be a longtime wargamer but i play Euro's too.. and I DM . a number of RPGs...

So i was thinking of trying to come next Saturday.. at the moment i can drive in the day so the saterday slot looks ok for me to try and turn up to. but wont be able to do thursday evenings.. no driving after dark.

My newest games i mentioned.. SE4X and Talon are wargames... Swords and Bagpipes is a russian KS i backed .. a quick simple game of betrayal of your country... but not too much.. just enough to make you rich.... Above and Below is the Ryan Lauket worker placement exploration hybrid ... Islebound another of his.. worker placement pirates sea serpents reputation and fish very pretty those.

but i've played a lot of games.. rated 200 odd on the BGG

So basically i intend.. health permitting to come next saterday.. just wondered if anyone was interseted in any of these.

I used to play at croydon games club and remember well all the standing around feet shuffling while trying to decide on any particular game.

Happy to bring nothing and see whats there

Yes Talon is a fine game.. I played starfire, Star Fleet Battles, Starfire2, Starfire 3 (uber) Starfire 4 (ugg) SFB commanders edition, SFB Captains edition, Fed commander, and now Talon comes along and gives a game for fleet combat that plays quickly.. is really simple and really complex

It was like first time i played Go....wait no thats my side of the board!! Ohhhh you can do that!

Hey Jef,

It was great that you came along. Thanks for looking after Roy for us - we have a few (at heart) wargamers, and Roy is one. Nothing more he enjoys.

And as you say, it is not the winning or losing, but the playing. Glad you enjoyed you gaming.

We always aim to make it the third Thursday of the month where we can, even though it clashes every October with Essen, so there are a few more of the "usual crowd" missing-in-action at this time of the year.

Good to meet you and see next time.
