For anyone joining us late, this is a five player game of DoDIII / WiFFE (draft rules ver. 8.99) played face to face in the north west of England over a number of sessions. We are currently looking for sponsorship from a curry house and brewery. No zombies.

Previously : Rhineland reoccupied, Ethiopia conquered, Japan invades China and defeats the Nationalists, Anschluss, Russian purges, Spanish Civil War stalemates, CW and France establish new Entente Cordiale, Persia conquered, Germany and Italy sign a second pact, Czechoslovakia sacrificed, Bessarabia seized, Finland attacked, Germany conquers Belgium and Denmark and overruns most of France.

November / December 1939

Politics: The US and CW sign a level 2 pact. Japan agrees a minor agreement with Argentina. Germany builds an INF for Finland (the Soviet player looks delighted by that).

The Democrats win the initiative roll but the Communists demand the reroll to get ahead of the Fascists. The die rolls don’t work so well and the Fascists end up going first followed by the Democrats.

Paris is ground struck in preparation for assault number 5 (or 6 – I forget). One corps is flipped. Greg carries on with his destruction of all Chinese forces by attacking two Communist units in the mountains at +6 but for the first time in living memory doesn’t roll that well at 9. Two Japanese lost, 1 Chinese corps dead. At least someone in yellow knows which way to point their gun.

The assault goes in and Paris falls on a 14 roll at +8 odds. Despite the French air force shooting down another German bomber the Nazis are too strong and after only 8 months war, the French capital falls. HQ Pretalat is eliminated as the German armored wing crashes through to the centre of France and it all looks a little terminal.

Meanwhile, the Soviets seek a “resolution” with the pesky Finns. Six ground strikes fail but the attack goes in nonetheless at +2. Unsurprisingly Andy rolls snake eyes again.

The Democrats mill about. US ships slowly start to arrive in Pearl Harbor.

Germans lurch forward in the snow. Bad weather encourages (finally) the subs in the Bay of Biscay to get their act together and they find the convoys – strong high box RN escorts fail to find them and surprise is obtained. And then we discover that the revised sub combat rules are brutal – the 15 strong convoy is decimated by just one 2 factor sub with 3 points damaged and 9 points aborted. Owwww.

And then the commies finish it. CW production in the sink, just before the end of year. Oops.

January / February 1940

Politics : It’s gear up time – all the way through USSR, Japan, Germany, the CW and the USA. Add in a forced Vichy by Germany (they bid to play two options) where most of the French territories decided to opt for Frexit as opposed to joining the German Union and a spurious attempt by the CW to get some more credit (again two options) and it was a long political session.

We are using the DoDIII Vichy rules to determine which territories go Vichy or Free French. This seems to be a little friendlier to the French player than the “standard” WiFFE 7 rules but perhaps this view is a result of some very fortunate rolls (for example Morocco and Algeria both went Free French) rather than the system employed. Of course, as French player I am basing my comparison on the game many years ago when every single French territory went Vichy. Yeah, that was a fun game.

Weather is poor. The armed forces of the world mill about, apparently taking stock of the new political order. The Free French government settles down in their new home in Martinique.

Is this report 11 or 12? If this is 12, did you miss typing one out? Curious readers want to know...

Yeah this is report 12. You will notice that there are two reports claiming to be #10 - the second one (SO '39 China falls, Paris doesn't) should actually be #11.

Because there is always a delay between submitting a asession report and it appearing, it is possible to lose track if posting several in a row.

Next will be #13. Lucky for some, I imagine.
