There should be a max number of edits one can make to their post (except for the Original Poster who may have a topic where he keeps the original post up to date with new information.. Maybe 2 edits and then either keep it or delete it.

*edited to add point below*
Or every edit could be required to have a summary illustrating just why the edit was required and what was exactly edited, ala Wikipedia

Unfortunately, I am not in favor of this type of literary oppression. I vote for rampant editing abilities. Because I make lots of mistakes.

Quoted For Past Reference

People often quote for reference, but since it can still be manipulated, it's really not reliable.

Like, why would you quote for past reference and not future reference?

I'm wondering what problem this is intended to solve.

I would much rather people be able to freely correct errors which they notice later in their posts, add additional useful info or ideas they thought of later, etc.

How about: you can't edit it again until someone freshly thumbs your post. And if they unthumb it, the post reverts to an earlier edit. Look, if your edits aren't incrementally improving the post, what's the point?

I'm guessing it was meant as a joke, with the 21 edits serving as the punch line.

Hopefully you are right.

I've seen this kind of suggestion made for real in the past, though.
