Hello,

Does a board game exists that would feel / play like the video game FTL? (have a ship, have to manage your crew / rooms, move to points with random events, ... in fact exactly like the game!!)

Thank you for any advice!

Galaxy Trucker feels a lot like it, though more whimsical in theme.

Space Alert

+1 Galaxy Trucker though not as close to FTL, imo. Though I'd be astounded if they hadn't played it.

As an wildcard:
Red November
(No spaceship but also has a feel of it.)

Hey Gloum Kupaa

I've played FTL some time too and really liked it. I don't know about any similiar boardgames with a space setting, but I would say the "big" lovecraft games are pretty similiar mechanics wise. You can play them alone or with up to 8 players (challenging the game mechanics).

You have to choose which actions/task you will go for, you have to fight different enemies, you're gonna upgrade your character(s), every round youre presented with a story text etc. All these games live from their randomness like FTL.

For me those games are pretty similiar:
Arkham Horror
Eldritch Horror
Elder Sign

Actually, I always felt FTL was inspired by Battlestations, the board game...

Exactly. FTL might as well be called Battlestations: The Computer game.

(Whoops. Posted right after Liam.)

One that was explicitly stated (IIRC) to have been inspired by FTL is Deep Space D-6, a solo dice-placement game

Galaxy Trucker plays well with 2, 3 and four players. The game isn't affected so much by player count.

Space Alert however plays best with 4+ players because with less you need to use a dummy player. But it really is a lot like FTL and just a very very great game. It has random encounters, energy-management, moving crew on a spaceship and a space setting. But it's in realtime so if you press space a lot in FTL this is the real thing

If you are able to get 6 - 8 players to the table you should really consider either Captain Sonar or Space Cadets Dice Duel. Maybe Classic Space Cadets is worth checking out but imo Space Alert is the better choice.

And I wonder how anyone could advice you to try out the FFG Lovecraft games?! They are NOTHING like FTL and just very solid Ameritrash-Dice-Fests (I do like them but I wonder how someone can compare them to FTL)

Yes, The Captain is Dead strikes me as a pretty close approximation of the experience you get from FTL and it's a good game to boot.

I'll second Space Cadets: Dice Duel. It was the first thing I thought of on this question, but you do need a large number of people to play it. Super fun though.

I've always thought Starfarers of Catan shared a lot with FTL.

Good luck finding it though.

I am absolutely astounded that the game most like FTL hasn't been mentioned yet....Xia: Legends of a Drift System! Aside from the crew management, which it doesn't have, it has all the things you're looking for! You can buy modules for your ship, upgrade your entire ship, go to planets and discover missions, trade, shoot down fellow players or npc's, become a bounty-hunter, and more!
