My look at the Center for Army Analysis Wargame Analysis Model (C-WAM). As a bonus, you can download the game rules, courtesy of the Freedom of Information Act.

2D6 combat results tables with column shifts? Tell me this wasn't designed by a hard-core wargamer!

I spied a D12 in there, don't discount the influence of tabletop RPGs. Appropriate I guess when being run by umpires as a large scale "play a simulation of possible events as yourself".

Not sure how "fun" it would be to play, more like hard thinky work. Interesting stuff, thank you for the rules, although I suspect I won't get the opportunity to play this ruleset, it does make for an interesting read.

Thank Michael, great story, but fram dammit, why do they always have to illustrate every story about wargames with a picture of RISK?

Believe me, I send them screenshots. They still use Risk. Latent childhood memories?

Impressive piece of work.

Makes NATO Division Commander seem like Tactics II.

It's still the most popular family wargame.

Cool find! Could it be the same wargame that is shown in this thread?

The Baltic game is from RAND Corp., not the Army. I actually asked RAND if there was a connection. They said no.

Just be grateful they didn't use a screenshot from a video game.

Impossible; that article wasn't illustrated with a photo of Risk.

Interesting. My reaction is the opposite. Yes, it is impressive but it shows how far NDC is removed from Tactics II - and in the same direction - as an 80/20 solution that could be done by two wargamers instead of by teams of umpires. (And it is in the same spirit that I consider Air & Armor an 80/20 approximation of NDC... which by the way would mean that it provides 64% of C-WAM for 4% the effort. :-)

The military, if they consider something important, should rightly put all the effort behind it that they can finance. For the hobbyist, it's all about bang for the buck. :-)
