Wowzers, for all the awareness and training about sexual crimes, there sure seems to be a problem in Germany. It's almost like they are importing people who come from a rape culture that don't seem to be interested in assimilating and respecting women.

Maybe there is a good reason for all women to start wearing a hijab.

Well, we cant judge.

Quote:

This year's Oktoberfest saw the least amount of people turning up at the Munich event in 15 years, but still experienced an increase in sex crimes reported to police, the Local writes.
Around 5.6 million people visited the festival this year, a drop of 300,000 compared to the previous year. The number represents the lowest since 2001, when 5.5 million attended the event, which took place soon after the 9/11 terror attacks.

As the numbers dropped, so did the amount of crime – with one type a notable exception. Thirty-one sex crimes were reported to police this year, compared to 21 in 2015, the Local reported.

READ MORE: Munich to spend extra €2.2m on Oktoberfest security in the wake of Brussels, Istanbul attacks

Other incidents occurred which didn't always involve official police reports, according to the support group Safer Wiesn for Girls and Women, which counted 215 women who came to a security checkpoint for help. Eighteen of those had experienced violence. That number also represents an increase from last year, when 197 women came to the checkpoint for help.

The crimes occurred despite increased security at the event, which saw organizers arrange entrance checks for everyone attending the festival grounds for the first time in the event's 200-year history.

The increased security came amid ongoing terrorism concerns throughout Germany, following recent attacks. In July, a shooting spree in Munich left 10 people dead. That same week, a teenager in Würzburg attacked train passengers with an ax and a man blew himself up outside a music festival in Ansbach.

Oktoberfest is no stranger to terrorism. One of the worst terrorist attacks in post-war history occurred at the festival in 1980, when a right-wing extremist set off a bomb that killed him and 11 others at the main entrance to the event.

Maybe lower attendance prompted a drop in beer prices as outlets compete for decreasing $ and public drunkenness is up?

Maybe with increased law enforcement presence the number of reports are up?

Maybe some people see the statistic an blame Muslims without any evidence that Muslims are committing the additional crimes?

Maybe it's an outlier and next year there will be less than 2015?

TBH there has been a much higher than base level of sexual assaults at Oktoberfest for decades. I guess there is an increasing amount of women who refuse to put up with groping and raise it as an issue. I think the numbers will increase before they get better.

The increase could totally be due to more Muslims but to assume there is a connection without evidence is... well...

But... But ...I thought that any increase in sex crime had to be Muslims, how can this not be?

I agree with you on one point -- a cause worth looking at would be refugees, and if the attacks were perpetrated by refugees.

It is a 50% increase from last year -- 21 to 31 reports.

On the other hand, assuming we accept that that picture is real, do you see many refugees in it? On the other hand, journalism is dead and that's probably a stock photo.

Anyway, like people say, stoke the outrage machine once the facts come out -- isn't that what conservatives always say about rape cases? No witch hunts, let due process run its course? Why's this different?

True, but cultural shifts like that (to the tune of 50%) don't typically happen inside of a single year.

you missed that there also is a link to the source of that statistic:
https://www.thelocal.de/20161004/oktoberfest-sees-lowest-num...

Quote:
As the number of visitors dropped this year, so did the overall amount of crime, with a decrease of 15 percent compared to last year.

But there was a higher amount of sexual crimes: 31 were reported to police this year, compared to 21 in 2015.

Organizers said this was due to greater awareness on the part of authorities.

Still, the group “Safer Wiesn for Girls and Women” counted 215 women who came to a security checkpoint for help - up from 197 last year - and 18 of the women had experienced violence.

There was a drop in other kinds of crimes, such as pickpocketing incidents and the number of people hitting one another with the heavy Maß beer jugs.

According to feminist activists it was indeed a matter of stress that each year at the Oktoberfest behave countless men beside, Bavaria, Munich, tourists, refugees. This was confirmed by the police: Among the suspects are the various men. The Cologne New Year's Eve and the Oktoberfest are not comparable - also because the Wiesn is unique. This makes them so beautiful and so dangerous.

The rate has increased from
1/280952 (5.9m/21)
to
1/180645 (5.6m/31)

Is 31 vs 21 inside the confidence level as a real change vs random noise?
