Previously : Rhineland reoccupied, Ethiopia conquered, Japan invades China and defeats the Nationalists, Anschluss, Russian purges, Spanish Civil War stalemates, CW and France establish new Entente Cordiale, Persia conquered, Germany and Italy sign a second pact, Czechoslovakia sacrificed, Bessarabia seized, Finland attacked, Germany conquers Belgium and Denmark and forces Vichy France. Italy declares war on the CW and the Free French. The US declares war on Japan who subsequently declares war on the CW.

November / December 1940

Politics. A bit dull. Owed options played and Roosevelt is re-elected (everyone loves a war president).

The Japanese send another 2 SCS into the Arabian Sea and are dutifully found and damaged then sent home, Greg making defense rolls against X results for both ships.

The Americans surprise themselves in finding the Japs in Christmas Island and aborting a couple of SCS with a damaged SCS in exchange (no names, no pack drill).

The Germans, having little to do during the depths of winter, go for Combined actions twice and manage to get 2 subs damaged but do kill another 6 CPs plus moving a double digit number to the repair pool. In the second impulse they send a Condor from Brest and port strike Belfast – using some of their large supply of intelligence points they succeed in gaining enough surprise to damage 3 and abort 6 more convoy points, then the Surface raider Komet gets into the act in the Cape Basin and (with more intelligence) repeats the dose by damaging another 3 CPs. Then the Japanese do the same on the other side of the map. It’s all getting a bit painful for poor old Laurence who is feeling like a punch bag at the moment which is very cruel what with him feeding us Scottish pies all weekend.

Fine weather everywhere! Japan invades Burma & the Philippines but takes some losses, and the ground strikes in China fail.

Russia sits quietly biding its time while the Democrats largely spend their time organizing the convoy lines but there is some excitement in the Western Med – a series of naval air combats lead to several aircraft (and pilots) being lost but the CW claim a 2-1 moral boosting win over Italy. Is the Western Med technically a home or away fixture for the CW?

Russia look to DOW the Baltic States but back in the Kremlin the Minister of Overdraft says nyet, Russian troops position for better, wealthier days.

Weather turns more wintery which curtails military activity somewhat but the USA do attempt a DOW against Germany but without success again (I think this is the third or fourth attempt I made and given the negative effect on future attempt that each fail has, I clearly thought I had a good chance). There is more Allied naval shuffling and Russia pass but the turn continues.

The Fascists are up and fine weather returns everywhere, Germany complete repositioning troops to the Polish border, Japan initiates combat in the Arabian Sea in an attempt to cut supply to the Suez and Greg continues to hone his well-deserved reputation as Dice Master by repeatedly making the search rolls and damaging a number of CW ships (Names Smithers, I want names!) but in the end Force H hang in there.

But still the turn continues - the Democrats pass but to no avail, Russia also passes and the turn also continues. So the Fascists are at the table again, weather is …… fine everywhere for the third time! However almost everyone is exhausted – Germany clears the picket ship in the Faeroes prompting much talk of search & seizure, rules books are reached for and consulted. The turn that wouldn’t die doesn’t die and the relieved Allies are up next – and the convoy lines are repaired.

And then the turn ends.

It's probably worth mentioning that the US has taken over all convoy duties in the Atlantic, which means that the CW economy is more or less immune to the wolfpacks. As the Italian player I have read and reread the multiple states of war rules and can see no other interpretation - and it does seem to me wrong that a single RN CL can 100% protect a massive convoy shipping war materials to be used against my brave german allies, even if the axis have every sub ever launched in the sea area. All the CW player needs to do is wait until near the end of the turn and then pop out the CL picket to block search and seizure . This does seem wrong to me (and we are using the new RAW8 ruleset so it hasn't been 'fixed' from RAW7). Mind you, I might change my mind when I'm playing the CW next.

One question though - if the US has played options to escort convoys, are US CPs then included in the resulting combats? Effectively, are US ships treated as being at war (and hence are in the combat) to satisfy the multiple states of war conditions?

Nope. The two escort options allow US CVs/SCS to be involved. Doesn't mention convoys (or subs or TRS/AMPH for that matter). US convoys still cannot be attacked.

Multiple states of war is the single most confusing bit of WIF.

I have given up trying to understand the multiple states of war rules. I leave that duty to you Greg.

I have one more report to catch up on but am now back in an airport heading for Singapore and China. Hopefully I will get this issued this week before hostilities are resumed next Friday night.

Note to my fellow players - take more photos next session.

Point taken. However as Russia I will not be taking that many detailed photos of the mid Atlantic.

In other news the R&R in the hurricane ravaged Caribbean is over and next stop is reacclimatisation in central Europe before the hostilities recommence next Friday.
