For the storytelling aspect, I like the individual monster cards to signify specific types of monsters. Based on raw tarot/hermetic symbolism, I came up with this scheme for the small swords cards:

2 - skeleton
3 - rats
4 - ogre
5 - basilisk
6 - giant spider
7 - wyvern
8 - serpent men
9 - hell hounds
10 - Minotaur (ruler of the labyrinth!)

Of course, the deck one uses may suggest certain monsters with the art. I've been playing with the miniature Luis Royo Dark Tarot, which I like for both the images and the small footprint. Its art suggests to me the following crew of monsters:

2 - rogue
3 - zombie
4 - troll
5 - wraith
6 - vampire
7 - banshees
8 - mind parasite
9 - angel of darkness
10 - angel of death

III - Maze of Delay
IV - Imperial Maze
V - Hierophantic Maze

VII - Maze of the Lost Champion
VIII - Maze of the Razor's Edge
IX - Maze of Solitude

Using the Barbieri Tarot deck lately, here are pics:

For monsters, I read the Barbieri swords as follows:

10 - Asmodeus
9 - Leucrottas
8 - Ghost*
7 - Siren
6 - Charon
5 - Efreet
4 - Erinyes
3 - Imp
2 - Revenants*
* In these two cards, the adventurer is shown in the foreground, and the monster(s) in the background.

And the Barbieri trumps major give the following mazes:

II - Moonlight Maze
III - Ancient Maze
IV - Imperial Maze
V - Crystal Maze
VI - Whirlwind Maze
VII - Sphinxes' Maze
VIII - Maze of Steel
IX - Verdant Maze
X - Looking-Glass Maze

Finally, the Villain cards (9e and 10e) are Cups for me, since I use either a d10 or mini cards as a hp tracker. In the Barbieri Tarot, these two Cups cards adjust the images of the Villains slightly:

9 - Lich-Queen
10 - Dragon's Eyrie

This last card actually suggests that I am working my way up the dungeon through tunnels from the foot of a mountain for the Dragon's Lair scenario.
