The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised!

As the month of October is the perfect time for games with creepy themes, my game night group decided to indulge in a session of Arkham Horror. Tonight we were up against Shub-Niggurath, an Old One we'd not yet faced in this game. The beast's in-game effect wasn't all that difficult to deal with as it only gave a minor boost to certain creatures, but its effect upon awakening was a nasty bit of business that would, ultimately, spell our doom.

The game started out well enough. We had some good rolls, and got a few good encounters that allowed us to build up a strong repository of clue tokens, which are essential for winning the game as they're needed to permanently seal gates from the realms of the Old Ones to our own world. Then we drew a Rumor Mythos card. Rumors have effects that linger on until either their fail or pass conditions are met. For this particular card, we had to roll each turn, and, on rolling a 1 or 2, were required to add a token to the Doom track. If enough Doom tokens are built up, the Old One awakens and you're forced to do combat. Unfortunately none of us had the cards necessary to shut it down, so we had to deal with its unpleasant effect. We kept moving at a strong pace, but were undermined when one of our number went insane, and I lost all my stamina, forcing both of us to discard a number of our item cards and a significant number of the clue tokens we'd built up.

Ultimately, the horror from beyond awakened thanks to the Rumor card. We braced for battle, but only one of the three of us was able to fight. Shub-Niggurath's awakening ability, you see, was that it immediately devoured any investigators who did not possess a defeated monster trophy. Only one of the three of us did, and he was doomed from the start. Shub-Niggurath's attack was to force the investigators to make increasingly difficult Sneak checks. On each failed check a player lost a trophy monster, and upon running out of monster trophies, would be instantly devoured. Our remaining companion had only three trophies and a Sneak score of three, but he went down with a truly spectacular fight. He rolled six consecutive successful combat checks against the monster and managed to cut its Doom token count down to half before joining us in the thing's belly.

Despite being our first ever loss at Arkham Horror, our friend's excellent finish made it one of our best sessions of any game yet at our regular game night, and will be a story we tell in many future game nights to come!

Just a small note, you said Shub in game gave a minor boost to some creatures, but... Shub power besides making Dark Young endless, also gives every monster a increase in toughness of plus one...

Well, with combat items and spells that's fairly minor. It never caused us an issue, in any event.

For me one more toughness to every monster is not minor, my observation was more that it appeared you tought Shub power was only to some creatures and not to all. Anyway a great ending, indeed the most important is the journey, not to win
