Using the 1.1 rules.
Options used: Rigid Germans and Rigid 5th Corps.

I’ve just started the 5th turn of the full campaign, so I thought I’d post the first day’s progress. I’m still entranced with the gameplay of BCS, though I couldn’t resist the attractions of 2 new COIN games and The Greatest Day, so I’m not playing BCS exclusively any more. Updates will probably be every 2-3 weeks or so, as it takes about that long to complete a full campaign turn playing solo. The contrast between what has happened so far in my game with the other two campaign sessions being reported is interesting. My Germans seem to be doing quite a bit better in some ways, but may be over-extended in others.

16 December (Turn 1)
Normal, Fair, 2 hexes

12th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Pass
The westward attack drives back the 2 US battalions on the flanks, but the defender of the Bullingen road holds firm. Fatigue increase to 1 and a 2nd activation is rolled.

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
Renewed attacks reduce the 1/394 to a single step, but they still refuse to retreat. Volksgrenadier forces slip past the roadblock to follow the retreating units of the 99th. Fatigue increase to 2.



2nd Infantry Division
The division started the scenario used, and the roll for a 2nd activation is successful.
Fatigue: 1
Establish Prep Def (as per Rigid 5th Corps rule)
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
The division moves units that were engaged in offensive operation against 326VG south, as news arrives of a general advance by German troops. The engineers garrison Krinkelt and other units move to block access roads to the Elsenborn ridge.



18th Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Partial
KG Renn kills the A/18 of the 14th Cavalry Group at the cost of 2 steps. This opens the road to allow infantry to march south to Radscheid and envelop the Schnee Eifel. One battalion of the 106th is sent in retreat over the Ihren. The unit remains Fresh and gets a 2nd activation.

SNAFU mods: +2 (no longer using a trail as part of the MSR)
Activation: Pass
Bleialf is taken, but attempts to capture a crossing of the Our go poorly, with losses to the attackers. Fresh status is retained.



14th Cavalry Group
The Group started the scenario used, but the roll for a 2nd activation is successful.
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
The recon battalions fall back to delay attackers wanting the roads west, while the amour TF moves to Bucholz and kills 2 steps of the 12th Fusiliers, who have no AV support. [Mistakenly set up Prep Def, but the HQ moved, so I’ve removed the marker]



326th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Pass
An attempt to take Hofen fails, with 2 steps lost. Fatigue increases to 2 and there is no 2nd activation. Artillery kills a step from a 2nd ID battalion in the 4131 stack.



CCB/9th Armored

Is placed ‘done’ within 2 hexes of St Vith, and successfully rolls for a 2nd activation.
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Pass
The formation counter-attacks 18VG at Schonberg bridge, throwing back II/295 with heavy losses, and using artillery to kill a step of I/294. Fatigue increases to 2.



212th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Partial
The division crosses the Sauer by rubber boat, leaving their heavy support behind. A barrage kills a step of the Echternach garrison. Fatigue remains zero and a 2nd activation is gained.

Activation: Pass
Attacks go in against three 4th ID battalions. Losses are fairly even to both sides, but the US troops hold firm. Fatigue remains at zero.



4th Infantry Division

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Pass
The garrison of Echternach has no safe path, and voluntarily retreats to 5001, losing a step (to 2). A 2nd activation is rolled.

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
A line is formed, and barrages, including 2 points of air power, kill 4 steps of the attacking Germans. Fatigue remains at zero.



352nd Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Partial
The formation crosses to the west bank of the Sauer, dropping support. A hasty attack to try and seize Bettandorf fails with the loss of 2 steps. Fatigue increases to 1 and a 2nd activation is rolled.

Activation: Pass
The Division presses onward, but additional attacks against Diekich and Bettandorf are easily held off. Fatigue increases to 2.



99th Infantry Division

The Division started the scenario used, and the roll for a 2nd activation is unsuccessful.

62nd Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +2
Activation: Pass
Two units of the 106th Division are sent to the graveyard, and the 62nd makes good progress in a drive toward Steinebruck and the bridge. Fresh status is retained, and a 2nd activation rolled.

Activation: Pass
1/183 dashes for the Burg Reuland bridge. A Grief team helps to capture the bridge intact and the battalion crosses to the far bank. The Steinbruck bridge is also intact, but the US is not attacked, as both OBJ markers have been used.



106th Infantry Division
The division started the scenario used, and the roll for a 2nd activation is unsuccessful.

277th Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +3
Activation: Pass
Attacks to seize the trails leading to Krinkelt are failures, with no ground gained. Fresh status is lost, but a 2nd activation is rolled.

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +2
Activation: Pass
Another round of indecisive attacks take place, with no result other than a couple of steps lost on either side. Fatigue remains at zero.



CCR/9th Armored

The formation started the scenario used, and the roll for a 2nd activation is successful.
Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -3
Activation: Partial
The formation counter-attacks Burg Reuland, with TF Harper throwing the German infantry back over the Our.



3rd Fallshirmjager Division

Fatigue: 1
SNAFU mods: -1
Activation: Partial
Units advance as far west as Manderfeld, and a hasty barrage kills 1 step of the C/18 Armored Cavalry. Fatigue remains 1 and there is no 2nd activation.



CCA/9th Armored Division

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
The formation takes a pro-active stance to defend the Sauer, moving up armour to cover the river. Attacks by fire and barrages from artillery and airpower kill 2 steps from each battalion preparing to make the crossing. Fatigue remains at 0 and a 2nd activation is rolled.

SNAFU mods: -2
Activation: Partial
Fire is concentrated on the II/987, reducing it to a single step. Fatigue remains at zero.



That’s the last of the US formations. So all remaining activations for T1 will be the Germans.

12th SS Panzer Division

The formation started the scenario used, and the roll for a 2nd activation is successful.
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +3
Activation: Pass
The Division moves west to prepare for a breakthrough next turn.



560th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Pass
Skirmishes with the 28th ID cause minor losses to both sides. Fresh status is lost and a 2nd activation is gained.

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: 0
Activation: Partial
Barrages send A/1, 110/28 to the graveyard. Fatigue remains at zero.



116th Panzer Division

The formation started the scenario used, and the roll for a 2nd activation is successful.
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +3
Activation: Pass
The Division pushes 2 battalions ahead of them in a drive for the Ouren bridge. Fresh status is lost. Keep your eye on this General von Waldenberg - he's a man to watch!



KG Peiper

The formation started the scenario used, and the roll for a 2nd activation is successful.
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +3
Activation: Pass
Peiper moves up to the rear of 3FJ, preparing to press through Manderfeld or Andler depending on what tomorrow brings.



1st SS Panzer Division

The formation started the scenario used, and the roll for a 2nd activation is successful.

Activation: Pass
1st SS move forward on Peiper’s north flank.



150 Panzer Brigade

The formation started the scenario used, and the roll for a 2nd activation is successful.

The unit follows in the wake of 1st SS Panzer



26th Volksgrenadier Division
Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +2
Activation: Pass
Battalions pour over the river and eliminate the US garrison of Hosingen. Fresh status is lost and a 2nd activation is gained.

Activation: Partial
Troops march west, with lead elements crossing the Clerf at Drauffelt. An attack on surrounded Holzthum goes badly, with 2 attacking steps lost. Fatigue remains at zero.



5th Fallschirmjager Division
Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +2
Activation: Pass
The division crosses the Our and surrounds the US units. Fatigue remains at zero and there is no 2nd activation.



2nd Panzer Division

Fatigue: Fresh
SNAFU mods: +2
Activation: Partial
With just a partial activation and the wait for the Dasburg bridge to be finished, all the division can do is push the infantry battalions over the river. There is no 2nd activation.



276th Volksgrenadier Division

Fatigue: 0
SNAFU mods: +1
Activation: Pass
The 88s kill a step of CCA/9s Cavalry battalion. Attacks are made against the CCA/9 units holding the river bank, but they hold firm with equal losses to each side. Fatigue remains at zero and there is no 2nd activation.
