Re: Pulp Fiction - Rated Extreme R, Day 1
RULES OF PLAY

ROLES

Pulp Fiction will be a partially hidden roles game.

- The following roles are potentially in the game, but several are not. Only four (marked below as Guaranteed) are definitely present.

- Specific role attributes, such as starting items or abilities, will not be known at the outset, except to the players with those roles.

Butch Coolidge (Guaranteed) - "Criminal" or "Citizen." An aging boxer paid by Marsellus to throw a fight, then paid more not to.

Vince Vega (Guaranteed) - "Criminal" The Man in Amsterdam, a hit-man partnered with Jules with few, if any, redeeming qualities.

Jules Winnfield (Guaranteed) - "Criminal" The scariest hit-man on earth, so bad his wallet says "Bad Motherf***er".

Marsellus Wallace (Guaranteed) - "Criminal" or "Evil." Kingpin of crime; cross him and he'll go medieval on your a$$.

Mia Wallace - "Criminal" or "Citizen." Marsellus's wife, a former actress and always looking for a good time.

Winston Wolfe - "Evil" or "Citizen." The man Marsellus calls when there's a "situation" to be taken care of.

Jimmie Dimmick - "Criminal" or "Citizen." One of Jules Winnfield's old friends in the suburbs.

Lance - "Criminal." Vince's heroin dealer; hasn't had to use his adrenaline needle in years.

Jody - "Criminal." Lance's wife, into piercings and tattoos.

Ringo (Pumpkin) - "Criminal." A petty liquor store robber devoted to Honey-Bunny, about to have an unfortunate encounter with Jules.

Yolanda (Honey-Bunny) - "Criminal." A petty liquor store robber devoted to Pumpkin, acts as a psychotic murderous bitch for crowd-control purposes.

Maynard - "Evil." Owner of the Mason-Dixie pawn shop, looks (and acts) like he dropped out of "Deliverance".

Zed - "Evil." Maynard's partner in sado-masochistic crime - as dangerous and deceptive as a viper.

The Gimp - Unknown Type. Some poor bastard in Zed and Maynard's basement. You really, really, really don't wanna know.

Captain Koons - Unknown Type. The man who delivers an "uncomfortable hunk of metal" to Butch at age 7, after hiding in the only place possible for 2 years.

Esmarelda - "Criminal" or "Citizen." A cab driver who knows how to tell a convincing lie and cover for her fares.

Fabienne - "Criminal" or "Citizen." Butch's paramour, and the key reason a whole lot of unfortunate things happen.

Raquel - "Criminal" or "Citizen." Winston Wolfe's lady, not unaccustomed to helping remove physical evidence and other matters related to "situations."

The Waitress - "Citizen." "Garcon means boy."

The Manager - "Citizen." Thinks he might be a hero, but really, who are we kidding?

Brett - "Criminal." A "former" associate of Marsellus, the emphasis very much on "former." Speak English, mofo?

Roger - "Criminal." One of Brett's buddies. Not a good thing to be.

Marvin - "Criminal." A snitch hiding with Brett and the others that have stolen "The Briefcase", hoping that ratting on his partners will buy him his life.

The Fourth Man - "Criminal." He hides... he shoots... he... MISSES?

English Dave - "Criminal" or "Evil." One of Marsellus's many "right hand men," runs a strip bar where Marsellus conducts much of his business.

- Other players in the game without one of the above roles will play either a "Citizen" or a "Petty Criminal." The exact number of citizens and petty criminals will not be known publicly (though some characters may know or learn this information). Citizens and Petty Criminals may have special abilities and/or items, and some abilities may be similar to abilities of named roles.

TEAMS AND TYPES

All roles, whether named special or not, will be assigned a particular TYPE. A player's type is revealed upon lynch or kill, but specific role information is not (except under special circumstances).

There are three types of roles:

- Citizen: Includes all "ordinary citizens" plus some special roles.
- Criminal: Includes all "petty criminals" plus some special roles.
- Evil: Only some special roles are evil.

All players are also assigned to a team for team victory purposes - if your team earns a victory, you share in that victory. Not all teams are known publicly - however, the following team information is known:

- All "ordinary citizens" belong to the CITIZEN team.
- All "petty criminals" belong to the CRIMINAL team.
- There is also a MAJOR CRIMINAL team, separate from the CRIMINAL team.
- Special roles may belong to the CITIZEN team, the CRIMINAL team, MAJOR CRIMINAL team, or to a completely different team.

Note that TYPE does not always match up perfectly with TEAM – just because someone reveals as “citizen” does not mean that person is on the Citizen team, and not every “criminal” type is actually on the Criminal team.

OBJECTIVES

Each player, or team of players, will have certain objectives they need to meet in order to win the game. There will be personal and team victories in the game.

- In most cases, personal victories are only realized if the player is alive at game end, or exits the game alive successfully.

- Team victories are earned for all team members regardless of whether players on the team are alive or deceased or out of the game.

CITIZEN TEAM: Wins when there are no more Evil roles in the game and the total number of “Criminal” Type players (regardless of team) is less than half the remaining number of Citizen Team members.

CRIMINAL TEAM: Wins if Marsellus Wallace, Vince Vega, and Jules Winnfield are no longer in the game, and the total number of Criminal team members is equal to at least half of the remaining players in the game.

MAJOR CRIMINAL TEAM and OTHER TEAMS: Victory conditions for other teams are known to those teams only.

REDEMPTION

The theme of "redemption" is a major part of the "Pulp Fiction" film, and will play a part in this game. Several roles will be able to earn their "redemption" in the course of the game, but not every role will be able (or need) to do so. Conditions for individual redemption may or may not be known to those players at the outset of the game, but will be revealed during the course of the game.

For some players, earning your redemption will mean you get a ticket out of the game with a personal minor victory - you may choose to exit the game alive. For some, this may be the only means to achieving a personal victory. For others, earning your redemption may not get you a ride out with your skin intact, but will instead open more options for you as far as game abilities are concerned.

ITEMS

There are several items in this game. Some items will be immediately useful, such as a .357 Magnum or a Samurai Sword. Others will just be items of no immediate value, such as a Big Kahuna burger, that may or may not have some value when combined with another item or multiple items. And some items may be part of a role's personal objectives.

Some items will be made available each night through a particular character role. Players wishing to obtain an available item must place their request with the moderator; the requests are funneled to the proper player in charge of that item(s), and that player may then choose whom to give an item to. Only one such item can be given by a player on any night.

Other items can be found by making a search. Any player can make a search for items as a night action (PM “search” to the moderator), but if this is chosen, no other night action can be taken. Chances of finding an item are random, and partially based on how many players choose to search. Certain roles, however, may notice your “search” action – be aware.

Some items in the game:

Guns – Gun items range from small pistols to submachine guns. Guns have different effects for different players; they may enable kill abilities, voting abilities, and others. Guns are available through “The Pawn Shop,” one of the Petty Criminals, and through Marsellus Wallace.

Other Weapons – Non-gun weapons are rare and have specific uses, as will be discovered by the players that obtain them.

Drugs – Most drug items are bags of cocaine, and are available through certain players. Each bag of cocaine is a one use item that permits the player to “stay up to party” all night; that player will automatically see any attempt to steal from or capture that player (though the attempt may still succeed anyway). Some drugs may not be what they look like – so use caution if you get a “bag of white powder” (some players will be able to tell the difference, but many will not.)

Alibis – An alibi is not really an “item” per se but they can be acquired the same way as some items are acquired. An alibi is a role that is not actually in the game, but once you obtain it, it might be safer to claim that role falsely.

Other Items – You can expect to find minor items featured prominently in the film. They may or may not help you in some fashion.

STEALING

There’s petty criminals and other low-lifes around – so expect that you may get your pocket picked during the game. Whether a steal attempt succeeds or not, there is a small chance you’ll find out who tried to rob you.

CAPTURE AND MISSING PLAYERS

It is possible that some players will go “missing” during the game. Players that are missing are not necessarily dead, but they may not post or vote while missing.

A common reason for players being “missing” is that they have been captured; captured players may be able to escape, and some players may be able to rescue captured players. Escaped/rescued players return to the game, and may then post and vote.

SPECIAL EVENTS

There will be some special events announced during the course of the game. The rules and conditions for these events, and their potential benefits, will be announced when they occur.

LYNCH RULES

We'll be using Longest Held Last Vote in this game.

If there are any powers that allow players to move or cancel votes, that will work as follows:

A moved vote is always considered to be last in order on a person. Thus, even if you were first to cast a vote on player X, if your vote is moved to player Y then your vote is considered to have been cast last on that person. This is only important in the case of tie-breaker purposes.

If multiple votes are moved, all are considered to be the "last votes" cast on the players they end up on. If this produces a tie between two players after votes are moved, then the player with the most original (unmoved) votes gets the tie-breaker. If these players have a tie for original votes as well, then again, the longest held last original vote determines the tie-breaker, as normal.

A canceled vote is treated as if it never happened. If a player's vote is the target of a move and a cancel, it is simply canceled. If a vote is the target of multiple move orders, the vote is NOT moved at all.

Roles are not revealed on lynch except under special circumstances. Some characters may learn role information of lynched players. A player's "Type" and "Team" are revealed on lynch, in general.

If a player departs the game alive during the day phase, his/her role is revealed publicly; his/her type and team are not revealed.

NIGHT KILLS AND OTHER NIGHT ACTIONS

In this game it is possible there will be multiple players or teams that may make night kills. Not every such team will be able to make a kill every night; some may have limited killing abilities.

Other night actions may remove a player from the game either temporarily or permanently.

Roles are not revealed on kill except under special circumstances. Some characters may learn role information of killed players. A player's "Type" is all that is revealed on kill in general.

If a player is missing, neither role nor type is not revealed.

If a player departs the game alive, his/her role is revealed publicly to all. The player's type and team are not revealed.

The Cassandra Automatic Vote Tally System

Your Moderator has enabled the Cassandra Automatic Vote Tally system
for this game. In order for it to function correctly, your votes will
need to be formatted correctly. The following rules will explain what
you will need to do:

Players
1. All votes must be bolded

2. The entire vote statement must be bolded and enclosed in bracekts: [vote jmilum]

3. Only one unvote and/or vote per post. You may have both an unvote
and a vote in the same post, but the unvote must come before the vote

4. You may [unvote all] instead of naming the current player
you are voting

5. If you [vote nightfall] your vote will be locked (voting
nightfall is allowed in the same post as a vote for a player, but it
must come after it, this does not violate Rule #3)

6. Vote tallies will be automatically posted to the game thread hourly
if the tally has changed. The Tally and Vote Logs (for each game day)
are also available on the Cassandra game page.

7. If your vote is not counted be sure to check the Vote Log page and
see if it was marked invalid and why.

8. Case does not matter and simple typos will not cause the vote to fail.

9. You may [vote no lynch] if your game allows it.

10. Quotes below the vote/unvote statement may cause the vote to be missed,
especially if they contain bolded sections.

11. Non voting players will be listed in the tallies. This will only be
correct if the Moderator notes which players have been killed (see below)

Moderators
1. The moderator will need to post [Dawn] when the day begins
(after the night results are posted) and [Dusk] when the lynch
deadline has passed and the day is over. Votes will not be counted
after [Dusk] has been posted. They will be registered again
after [Dawn] is next posted.

2. You may include a day number in the dawn and dusk post for
informational purposes, but it will not be used by the system.
Cassandra will increment an internal counter each time it sees
[Dawn] no matter what day is shown in a dawn post (i.e.
[Dawn 3] the three is allowed but ignored)

3. After dusk has been posted, the Moderator may go to the game page
on Cassandra to request a Final Tally to be posted before the normal
scan period has elapsed (i.e. Game Y gets scanned at 45 min. after the
hour, if it lynches at 7pm the moderator may request a tally to be
posted from the game page before 7:45pm. it will also be posted
regardless of whether or not it has been changed since the last
posting) - Do this by clicking on the 'Retrieve Final Lynch Time Vote' link.

4. You will need to note which players were killed via the lynch or at night by
either posting [killed jmilum] in the thread, or by going to the game
page and editing the player list. When posting in the thread, be sure to post
[dusk] before posting the lynch kill, and post [dawn] before
posting the night kill.
Example:
A. lynch time has passed so post [dusk]
B. goto the game page and select a final tally to be posted
C. check the final tally and post [killed melsana]
D. after the night deadline has passed post [dawn]
E. post the night kill with [killed kima]

Your Moderator has chosen to use the Longest Held Last Vote method for a tiebreaker - This is just for Cassandra system, and there may be a different tiebreaker specified by your Moderator in the ruleset.

REMINDERS TO PLAYERS

The participation alarm system is active. You don't post in a 24 hour period, I give you warning that you need to post. You don't respond or post, I get medieval on your ass.

The first lynch (due to mod delays) is tomorrow at 8 PM BGG time. Don't come here cryin' and whinin' that you didn't know what time lynch was.

Everyone has received their role via Geek-mail. Everyone also has a mod-player chat in Cassie, and any players that have PM privileges with other players have those rooms set up.

The game is rated Extreme R for a reason, so don't pull any punches. However, even with that level of profanity permitted (and encouraged), please remember to remain respectful of your fellow players.

Finally, have fun with this game. I have tried my best to make it balanced but, like many large projects, it's difficult to tell, especially with new rules and hidden roles and such. So tear into this like Jules into a Big Kahuna Burger.

Re: Pulp Fiction - Rated Extreme R, Night 0
Some points of clarification:

If you are lynched and you have any items, your items will be randomly given out to those players that lynched you.

If you are night-killed, your items go to the player(s) that killed you.

Any act of stealing is committed prior to kill and/or capture.

Capture occurs before kill. If a player is captured prior to kill, the player is captured and remains alive.

Kills are resolved simultaneously. If Cap kills jmilum and jmilum kills Rukasu, both jmilum and Rukasu die.
