Hey, I thought people with experience would be able to point me the best way (easiest or cheapest) to get from the airport to the city of Essen.
From what I understand you can take a train from the Dusseldorf airport to the city center of Essen?
Is that right? Do you recommend it?

Thanks for any help you can give

Yes, there are dircet trains and it should be the cheapest way to get there (about 10 - 20 € depending on the kind of train, slow regional train or express).

You can take the train from Düsseldorf airport. It goes directly to Essen main station. You can take the RE1 or RE6, I think.

From Essen main station you take the underground tram U11 to Messe Essen.

Don't take the express! It's much more expensive and you safe nearly no time for there are to many stations between Düsseldorf and Essen, so that the Express can't go fast.

Yes, train will be the best and cheapest way to travel from düsseldorf (flughafen) airport to essen hbf (city center).
There is a (little) train station in the airport (3 min travel distance) and during the day every 20 minutes a train leaves to essen hbf.
There are 3 differnent kinds of trains: RE, IC and ICE. RE costs ~6€, IC 10 and ICE 16,5€. Every one needs ~ 20-25 minutes until essen hbf.
I would recommend you the RE or IC.

Take a look at bahn.de.
Your source station is
'DÜSSELDORF FLUGHAFEN (DUS)'
and dest is 'Essen Hbf'.

At essen hbf you need to take the underground train U-11 to
'Messe Ost/Gruga, Messe West/Süd' (5 mins).

Alternativ you can pick a taxi at düsseldorf airport to messe essen. It will take you there in ~20min and cost you ~60€.

Have fun and have a good travel.

+1 for ysirian

Don`t take the express. Use the "RE1" or the "RE6" to Essen main station and than the "U11" "Messe Ost/Gruga ; Messe West/Süd". Note that you have to "leave the main station" and go to the Underground for the "U11".

You are mistaken the 'R' with the 'S' train.
S1 and S6 are going to Essen but neither stops in Düsseldorf Flughafen. First you would have to go to 'Düsseldorf Derendorf' to get one of those.

Nevertheless there are REs from Flughafen to Essen Hbf every 20 mins.

Here are the links to the plan of RE1 and RE6. Both trains stop at Düsseldorf airport (D - Flughafen) and Essen main station (Essen Hbf)

And they are way faster than the S-Train
