Below is a definition for VPP. Epic Dice Tower Defense could benefit greatly with the addition of this game mechanic. Please feel free to post your opinions of how you feel this could help/hurt and what 'Warlord' roles+powers you'd like to see included.
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players. To illustrate, here are some notable examples.
In Ogre, one player controls a single powerful piece, and the other plays many weaker units. The net effect is a balanced game.
In Cosmic Encounter, each player is assigned a random special ability at the beginning of the game. Although each player has the same victory goal (control five non-home colonies), their abilities enable differing means to the end.
In Here I Stand, each player controls a political power with unique ways to score victory points. Some focus on military conquest, some on religious influence, etc.
I guess I'll get this started.
Disclaimer: The below offered concepts are just off the cuff and have in no way been tested.
Fey Queen -
Ability: Charm, you may choose a minion attacking your lane. The controlling player rolls that attacking minion before the attack roll. If an Icon is rolled the minion is placed into a wave slot of yours instead of attacking.(once per attacking opponent)
Dwarven Engineer -
Ability: Measure Twice, when constructing towers you may choose to reroll any number of rolled tower dice or add +1 to all rolled tower dice.
Battlefield Taskmaster -
Ability: Do or Die, when a wave fails to destroy a tower you may reroll a unit within that wave, ALL rerolled minions equalling the tower strength are returned to the supply.
Ability: Call of the Horde, when you hire minions you may gain an additional die of that minion type.
War Mage -
Ability: Dark Pact, after all players have completed the Buy Phase you may return 1 minion from a wave slot of yours back to the supply as the cost to cast 1 spell from the supply.(once per turn)
Gnome Artificer -
Ability: Tinker, you may construct up to 2 Ballistae and Catapults. When using a Ballistae or Catapult you may reroll the result and then after resolving it's effect destroy that die.
Ability: Living Wall, before the Attack Phase you may choose the most forward tower in either of your lanes and add it to any of your wave slots. Towers score VP on a roll of 5 or 6 and after scoring are rerolled returning to their original position if they were not destroyed.
