Hey there.

I own the base game and I've been thinking about getting one or more of the expansions for Hive. However, having read the rules for this particular expansion, I can't help feeling they are a bit convoluted. There's one rule and MANY exceptions (that's always a bad sign IMHO), and the exceptions are not very intuitive (why wouldn't I be able to move the piece affected by the Pillbug's ability?)

I would love to read some opinions on the matter.

Thanks!

I felt the same way when I first read the rules. But in just a couple of plays, I got to the point where the Pillbug's ability was quasi-intuitive. I think it is a valuable addition to the game. It makes for longer, more complex plays.

I agree pillbug is a bit more complicated with rules subtleties than ladybug or mosquito. (But as Carthoris notes, it's not very hard to learn its rules.) But it also changes the gameplay a lot more! (Which is a bug or a feature depending on your personal taste.)

Ladybug is the most simple & straightforward.

Mosquito is nicely "meta" but still has simple rules.

I agree with both of them. More complicated sure, but still easy to grasp after some plays, and certainly makes games go longer.
