Good evening,

I am a book guy, if I read it has to be a good solid book in my hands I cant do it digital for some odd reason.

I am interested in creating my own board game for my group to play but was looking for a good book on board game design and the hobby in general. After going through Amazon.com and seeing way to many to choose from my question is this:

Can anyone recommend a good book for board game design or the hobby in general? Why is this your recommendation? And how did it help you?

Thank you.

Not a book, but well worth checking out if you are into design. Blog by Mark Rosewater on designing Magic: The Gathering.

I recommend it because I have read it from time to time and find it a good source of inspiration, knowledge, and experiences from a designers standpoint on a game that has been around since 1993... and who doesn't know "Magic the Gathering."

A number of good titles in this thread -- most (maybe all but blog posts) available in hardcopy.

The Art of Game Design: A book of lenses by Jesse Schell. You can probably get it at your local library, or by interlibrary loan if they don't have it.

The Lenses can be downloaded as an app. You lose some of the context if you don't have the book, but if you do, or just want a very shallow understanding, the app is nice.
