I just looked into my box and found some "Open Area" cards. How are they used in the game?

If you are unable to pay the harvest cost of an area (typically water for fields and food for animals), those areas turn into "open areas" and are disabled. The rulebook may say to flip the cards over to indicate this, but one of the kickstarter stretch goals was to have cards that could be placed overtop of your areas with pictures of fallow fields that showed this instead.

N.B. The thing that looks like a giant dead ant upon closer inspection seems like a set of broken harrows.

Is the Open Area considered a 'location' when you need to build a new thing?

Ie can I build stuff adjacent to an inactive (Open Area) card?

Yes, you can build new locations adjacent to Open Areas.

They count as locations but do not have a type of their own (ie they are not considered Fields, Livestock etc as long as they are Open Areas)
