Hi there. I bought the game at essen today but grabbed a French copy by mistake. Luckily the game itself is language-independent but the rulebook isn't

I think I can guess the actions myself but for the special action cards english rules would be great. Fantastic if the publisher or anyone could post them here.

Thanks!

Here's my translation from the German rules:

Game Components

70 Good Cards in 7 different types: [Back of Goods]
Weapons, Wine, Jewels, Substance / Fabric, Porcelain, Musical Instruments and Gold Bars.

There are 10 cards of each type (or crates).

Seven cards of value 1, Two of value 2 and one with value 3.

10 Message in a Bottle Cards, including one Sunrise Card (see pages 14 -15)

[Back of Bottle Card] [Sunrise]

Game Setup

1. Prepare the train (cargo? German: Zugstapel) deck:

- Set aside the Sunrise Card
- Shuffle the Message in a Bottle Cards, draw 4 and place them back in the box. They are not used in the game.
- Shuffle all the Good Cards with the 5 remaining Message in a Bottle Cards.
- Count out 15 cards from this pile and shuffle the Sunrise Card into it, creating a small stack. Place the remaining stack of cards on top of this small stack.

You now have a train deck consisting of 70 Good Cards and 6 Message in a Bottle Cards. One of the Message in a Bottle Cards is the Sunrise Card, which is found in the last 16 cards of the train deck.

2. Distribute the starting cards (depending on the number of players)
- 2 player: 4 cards
- 3 players: 3 cards
- 4 players: 2 cards

Each player receives the specified number of cards from the train deck and places them face-up in front of him in his personal display. All goods of a similar type are sorted by placing them slightly overlapping one another, so that you can see their individual point values. Two or more cards of one type are called a “set”.

Message in a Bottle Cards are also distributed openly.

The laid-out cards represent his Starting Booty.

Distributing the Booty

A game consists of a sequence of sharing contests.

A sharing contest is always carried out between two players: The Card Dealer and the player to his left.

The player who last tasted salt water is the first Card Dealer.

The Card Dealer draws the top four cards from train deck and places them face-up on the table, separate from the players' personal displays. The first two cards in front of the player to his left and remaining two in front of him. These four cards represent the Booty in this sharing contest.

3 Player Example:

First Card Dealer

The players are allowed to talk in advance about their intentions and agree on certain actions. However, no one is bound to their commitments!

It is quite up to the players, if they agree on a deal, to lead an opponent on the slippery ice or simply want to interfere with the negotiations of the active players just as an “uninvolved third party”:

Talking is the best weapon of a beach pirate!

Each player places the cards he has received into his personal display by adding the cards to the Sets or starting new ones.

The player to the left of the Card Dealer of this round becomes new Card Dealer and draws four cards for himself and the player to his left.

3 Player Example:

The players A and B already have the first sharing contest behind them.

Player B sits on the left of the first round (A) card dealer and is thus the dealer of the current round.

He puts out four cards so the sharing contest can begin between him and the player C, who is sitting on his left.

Thereafter, Player C will play as the Card Dealer in the sharing contest against Player A, and so on.

Message in a Bottle Cards
(see pages 14 – 15)

Each bottle contains a document, with which the owner can or must trigger a special event during the course of the game. (A detailed description of all Bottle Cards can be found on pages 14 and 15.) During a sharing contest, Message in a Bottle Cards are treated as Good Cards. If a player takes a Message in a Bottle Card, he puts it face-up on his personal display. When exactly a player can use a Message in a Bottle Card depends on the respective card. The Message in a Bottle Card will be discarded after use.

Note: It is quite possible to play a simplified variant by leaving out all the Message in a Bottle Cards (except the Sunrise Card) out of the game.

Game End

The game ends immediately when the Sunrise Card is drawn. The sharing contest during which this card was revealed is no longer carried out.

Now each player determines his victory points:

- Each player first calculates the total score of each set in his personal display by adding the values of the cards of each set.
- Only the most valuable and the most worthless set bring a player victory points. Each player adds the value of the cards of these sets in their personal display.
- In case of a tie for the most valuable or worthless sets of a player, all these sets are scored!
- If all the sets of a player have the same value, the total value of all sets will be doubled! They count as the most valuable as well as the most worthless set.

Important: The values of the cards of each set are added, not the number of cards.

Example:

This player has:
- 2 Wine
- 2 Fabric
- 4 Musical Instruments
- 5 Gold Bars
- 6 Porcelain

And receives 2 + 2 + 6 = 10 Victory Points

(If he had another Gold Bar of Value 1, he would have 2 + 2 + 6 + 6 = 16 Victory Points.)

This player has:

- 3 Jewels
- 3 Weapons
- 3 Fabric

And receives (3 + 3 + 3) x 2 = 18 Victory Points

The player with the most victory points wins the game.
In the event of a tie, the tied players share the victory.

Message In A Bottle Cards

Broken Lantern

Before the sharing contest:
In the following contest, the cards are dealt face-down. The player who played the lantern looks at the cards (without changing the composition). He can tell as much or as little as he likes: the truth, partial truth or lie – everything is allowed.

Look-out

When the Sunrise Card is revealed:
The owner of this card can decide to ignore the Sunrise Card. If he does the game continues until there are not enough cards to complete a sharing contest. The Sunrise Card has no benefit to the player who receives it.

Theft

Immediately: When the player receives this card, he takes one card from the personal display of another player and places it in his personal display.
Important: This card must be used immediately when a player receives it. This also applies during the construction of the play area.

Strong Wave

Play after the cards of a sharing contest have been laid out: The cards are discarded and four new ones are drawn.

Note: If the Convoy card was played before Strong Wave, only four new cards will be drawn.

Whirlpool

Play after the cards of a sharing contest have been laid out: The owner of the card reorders the four cards of the sharing contest. However, there must still be two cards in front of each of the two players involved.

Convoy

Can be used at any time before the result of a sharing contest is determined: Two additional cards are drawn and placed so that the players have three cards each.

The Two-Hand-Trick

Play before players count to 3 in a sharing contest: The owner of the card uses both hands in this contest and decides which of his two gestures applies, depending on the chosen gesture of his opponent.

Void / Foiled

Play after the gestures of the two players in a sharing contest: The contest is voided and is repeated (with the same players and cards)

Bet

Play before players count to 3 in a sharing contest between two other players: The player bets on the outcome of the sharing contest by predicting their gestures with both his hands, trying to match them with the gestures of the two other players.

If he is correct, he can take as many cards as he wants from the booty before the gestures of the two opponents are evaluated.

Important: In a two-player game, this card is removed before the beginning of the game. It is then 1 of the four bottle postcards, which are removed before the start of the game. The other three cards are still randomly determined.

Sunrise Card

When this card is drawn, the game ends immediately. This is also true if it is drawn by Convoy or Strong Waves card effects or is seen by the player who has just played Broken Lantern.

Important: The Sunrise Card is always shuffled into the last 15 cards of the deck.

Hi there and thanks again. I had played without the talking part so far. I told other players to just make a decision and then do the rock-paper-scissors thing. Much more fun the way the rules say

Since you asked for the word "Zugstapel", here are some minor corrections:

onetonmee wrote:
Substance / Fabric

I guess, the German word was "Stoff" which means usually "fabric" or "type of material", so comparing with the card image it should be fabric.
(Stoff is also a colloquial term for drugs which can also explain why you found "substance" as a possible translation )

While "Zug" means "train", it's also the noun derived from "ziehen" ("draw"), so "Zugstapel" is simply the draw pile.

I case you wonder what this is supposed to mean, it's a German expression ("jemanden aufs Glatteis führen") meaning "to lead so. up the garden path".

Again, thx so much for your help.
