Hi there Im a new solo player of this excellent game but just using the base set Ive been getting my ass kicked a lot. I asked on here about a good expansion to get and was recommended to get 'Foundations of Stone'. It's arrived today but the info on the back of the pack says that it can only be played in conjunction with Dwarrowdelf - is that true?

If you could recommend a good next step in terms of an expansion purchase for a new (solo) player do you have any suggestions?? Thanks in advance.

Andy

If you own only the Core Set, the only adventure packs you can play out of the box will be the Mirkwood Cycle - Hunt for Gollum through Return to Mirkwood.

After that they followed a pattern of big box (deluxe) expansion followed by 6 adventure packs. You need the core set and the appropriate big box to play the expansion packs of that cycle.

Of course you can buy any adventure pack and use the player cards anytime. The info above refers to playing the actual adventures.

Hope that helps!

In general, Tales from the Cards has the best guide to the various decks

The recommendation for foundations of Stone would have been for the cards. Not the scenario. You need the Khazad Dum deluxe expansion to play the scenario. But the player cards can be used to good effect in the core scenarios.

Beorn's Path really helped me get started in this game while just using the core set.

Just to confirm:

You ARE able to use the PLAYER cards from your purchased Adventure Pack, (adding to your player cards from the core set, in order to attempt the core set quests), no problem. It will be the ENCOUNTER cards from Foundations of Stone which will be redundant, until you pick up the Deluxe set Khazad Dum. (That's because the quest for Foundations of Stone will require further encounter cards from the Khazad Dum box in order to play it)

The other thing to suggest, if you are finding the core set quests tricky, is making proxy copies of the more powerful cards from the core set, to include up to 3 copies in your deck. You could stand more of a chance with 3 copies of Sneak Attack, or Unexpected Courage for example. These are strong cards and worth having multiple copies of, so if you only have one core set, you can legitimatly create proxy cards somehow, and add these in.

I second this. It sounds like you were given some poor, or poorly explained, advice for your purchase.

This is very helpful for new solo players.
It guides you through a progressive tail with only one core set so that you can start winning with only owning it and have the most fun out of a single core.
