If you play without picking the recommended heroes/equipment/spells of the scenario, what is the limit/restriction to the items and spells you can have?

There officially is none - if you deviate from the suggestions then "you're on your own."

Just be aware of weights and what works with a hero's abilities.

Eventually, someone (or me, if i get the time) will devise a system to make that easier.

Some basic guidelines to go for:

1- Do you need a specific item for the scenario? If Yes, then that item should be assigned to a hero (players choice), even if you switch the original bearer out.

2- What items does the hero need to function. If he's an archer, he needs a bow, logically. If he's a defensive warrior, he might need armor or a shield, or both.

3- If a spellcaster is switched in, then he needs some spells to be able to achieve anything. This is more complex than for normal items.

Ultimately, a "default equipment" should be done for each hero, mostly based on the theme of the character. For example, Conan's basic version (Base game) only has a sword, but certainly a finely crafted weapon. If a bastard sword exists, then that'd be his default weapon.

Then, to balance the difficulty of a scenario, some items could be granted to the heroes (a piece of armor, or a battle axe, or a throwing dagger, that kind of thing). Heroes could then switch their weapon, or add the weapon to their inventory if they wish to carry it.

When used in conjunction with the points value chart to swap things around (found on this site), this will hopefully help people actually "play" with what they got, rather than being stuck in a never-ending playtesting loop.
