What happens if a spell has no valid ingredients?

Let's say that only two oranges are rolled, and they are both invalidated by black. Can you cast an orange spell with 0 ingredients and take the two space bonus for completing a perfect spell? Or must all players attempt to cast a black spell for the round?

I think it just plays as usual. Players just play no card to match the (null) ingredients. If anyone plays a card, that's a penalty to move backward at most 2 spaces.

According to the rules, the players, who are not leading, can advance 2 spaces because no players can get any magic card (because no black symbols are matched).

Cheers,
Star

If a spell has zero ingredients then that spell simply doesn't exist for that turn. You have to go for the other color if you want to move. There's no such thing as guessing 0 to get a perfect match.

That's two opposing views. Anyone else have someone exploit do this in a game? What was the ruling at the table?

From the rules:

"To be valid, a formula must contain only symbols appearing in one color on the dice after sorting."

So, no symbols = no valid formula.

Michael had it right.
