This community is a constant reminder how incredibly awesome people in this hobby truly are!

The event "24 Hours to Play with Your Food" raised over $42,000 for Souls Harbour Rescue Mission. That brings the 4 year event total to over $120,000. Simply amazing.

CBC Article about the event:

CJME article about the event:

Here are some photos of the event:

In a time of political overload and nonsense, it is refreshing that a small unassuming community can raise such a large amount of money. These things largely go unheralded in the face of all of the other drama and shite in the news these days. Pardon me while I bask in this awhile. I am so proud and humble to be a part of this community!!!!

The article mentioned that money is raised throughout the year. If so, what events does your group hold or how does the money get raised, apart from the 24 hour marathon?

The event is comprised of teams and they are responsible for their own "Micro" fundraising events throughout the year. A clever approach as it shifts the creativity and responsibility to many small groups who all approach fundraising in different ways. Each team is provided with a giving page that they can use to collect donations. That automates the money handling and looks after the administrative burden of getting the money to the charity and the issuance of tax receipts.

Some of the fundraisers have been very clever. For instance, our team has raised money through:
- Formula De League Member Fees
- Curated Beer Tasting Event.
- Dart Tournaments
- Lobster Boils
- Scotch Tasting Event.
- Scones and Cookie Sales.
- Bottle collection (Mostly from my place).
- Boardgame Auction.
- Backyard BBQ / Firepit gatherings.

We try to host fun fundraising events that people enjoy attending so they do not feel charity burnout or that we are always asking for money. We do get some money from direct solicitation / donation, but prefer to offer entertainment or value commensurate with the amount being asked.

One team created their own Escape Room and ran it over several weekends. Another hosted a Horror Night of themed board games and role playing games which was held at a local pub. Still another team held a Pokemon Go hunt where participants paid a $10 registration fee and went off tracking Pokemon for a designated time limit.

There was plenty to choose from!

Our team has run many types of fundraisers:

Carcassonne League
Twilight Struggle League
Horror themed board game night

One of our team members just had his 11th birthday. He raised $300 from friends and family — he asked for donations to Souls Harbour in lieu of presents. Sweet kid.

I've cut this from our sponsorship letter:

The Play with Your Food event will be held this year on October 15-16 at the Dean Smith Youth Centre (located at the corner of Athol and Dewdney). In 2015, this event included 120 participants who fundraised over $38,000, which went directly to supporting the various programs offered to vulnerable members of our community by the Mission:

The Women’s Emergency Shelter consists of four rooms with a total of twelve emergency beds available for women and their children. The Men’s Emergency Shelter has accommodations for twelve individuals. Guests at both locations have access to shower, laundry facility, kitchen area, a warm meal and staff to talk to.

Shayil Home (Women’s Addiction Program) is a year-long residency-based program where women and their children come to a safe environment to overcome addictions with the support of staff and alongside women on similar journeys.

Little Souls Daycare is a licensed and subsidized childcare facility with 60 spaces located in North Central Regina. Their mission is to provide a caring, warm, and safe environment for each child from infant to school age to play, explore, and learn.

Zeike’s Place Youth Centre consists of a full-sized gymnasium, a large games room, and a full kitchen and dining hall. It is currently utilized five times a week to reach out to high-risk youth in the community.

The Soup Kitchen is open to anyone in need of a meal. More than 200 filling and nutritious supper meals are provided each week day for a cost of $3.43 per meal.

Harbour House is an apartment complex that has 25 bachelor suites and five 1-bedroom suites for hard-to-house individuals that has operated since 2008.

Souls Harbour Rescue Mission receives no ongoing funding from any level of government to provide services to those in need in the community. Events like Play with Your Food are integral to the success of their life-changing programs.

That is a lot of good causes! I hope they are getting money from many sources...
