Today I've been browsing the forums and got really excited about a very old post about a rumour that the Terra Mystica designers were making a game about Terra Mystica with a space theme.

Is this correct? Do we know anything yet about where the game is in the designing process? Or did development stopped?

To my best knowledge, development is still going on.

Despite that, when it's released, I expect it will really take off.

It was on the table at the Feuerland booth at Essen.

A PnP prototype, that is, not a finished game .

Did you have the chance to play it?

No, actually I don't think anyone was playing it, when I was at the booth.

I don't think that I have anything to add, that's not already out there, e.g.

The two links are in German, but if that's not your thing, then there are also pictures .

As far as I know the latest information on the game is this post by the designer:
https://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/22227023#22227023

And no, the development has for sure not been stopped.

I can confirm that development is going on, and hope to do my share in the playtesting.

I.e. the person I know best whistle got a prototype for testing at Essen, which I'll be playing a bit over the next weeks. Now I'm off to play a first game against myself.

Thank you everyone for the information!

I know that what I'm going to say is very problematic due to Copyright issues (and fear of getting the idea stolen, which is reasonable).

Wouldn't be nice to test it online in a platform like terra.snellman? My guess is that it could benefit a lot in the final playtesting and balancing of the factions. That way, having several versions of the same faction after printing would be avoided (I mean the Shapeshifters scenario).

I guess the reason they don't do this is that someone could steal the game and produce it on his own means. I also believe that the designers thought about that possibility as well; but I would like to know your opinions on this matter.

Enjoy - despite being a prototype, it's already much fun!

Unfortunatelly no.

Working title is "Terra Mystica: Gaia Project" :

"Gaia Project" as part of the name is also one of the new features, another kind of terraforming (in fact it is "gaiaforming") which is connected to another power bowl. After the income phase (some things stay, as they were in TM) comes the Gaia-phase: the Gaia projects from the previously round will be finished, the "gaiaforming" of formerly toxic or radioactive worlds will be completed. So as Gaia planets will be a crucial element of the game, they will also be part of the name.

Interesting! I had not heard this information. The names I proposed were just to be funny, of course

Hi there!

Just wanted to chime in and say that looks real cool. Now the real question is.. Will an upgrade pack be available for sale to owners of original terra mystica? Just to include the maps and components not present in the original version.. It seems the wooden components are similar..

Thanks for reading!

Cheers,
Lenz

It's a completely separate game. I think expecting an upgrade pack is totally unreasonable. This isn't a second edition, it's a brand new game with some similar mechanisms.

they're similar because they're just playtesting a prototype.

Somehow I think the space ones will be different.

Different and new game, not an expansion or upgrade. Think Agricola and Caverna - you recognize mechanisms and material, but still it's a different game.

My guess: the prototype uses some TM material because that's what they have. E.g. if you want to make a tile for the new game and have the choice between
1) printing a piece of paper and shrink-wrap it, or
2) taking a TM bonus tile and glue the paper on it,
then the latter is the nicer and more sturdy solution.

I'd say: Just get TM (base game) if you want to play it now! It's still almost a year before you'll be able to purchase a copy of Gaia Project and that's a lot of time to play this great game.
Besides: I'm absolutely sure that Gaia Project will be a very good game, at least for me, as the prototype is already a lot of fun. But no one knows if the final result will eventually be better in general or for your group than absolutely brilliant TM. Clearly beating this is incredibly hard to achieve. Maybe except for a real theme fanactic who loves space and hates fantasy...
Think of Caverna: The Cave Farmers, which is a very successful game, but which did by no means make Agricola obsolote (the hardcore/competetive gamers are actually still playing Agricola).
