I'm a big fan of railroad themes and I was wondering if there are any good games out there that can be played well with two players? I know most railroad games will be best with at least three but my wife and I play most games with just us two.

I am looking for:
-Something heavier than Ticket to Ride (we have this already).
-Some tension even with two players.

If you like worker placement, you could try Russian Railroads. It may not be what you were expecting when asking about railroad games, but it scales well for two and the nature of limited action spaces creates conflict. The Russian Railroads: German Railroadsexpansion adds a ton to the game and is highly recommended.

You might want to check out Rahdo's review of First Train to Nuremberg.

Railways of Mexico

It's the small map that comes with Railways of the World, tight even for 2 players.

For that matter, Railways of the World: The Card Game is a nice short 2-player game which still manages to capture a good amount of what makes the original game great.

I have been on a Railways of the World kick recently again. Although it plays best when more people are competing against each other the two-three player map of Mexico that comes with the base game plays well enough with just two.

I've yet to dive into Russian Railroads nor the German expansion either, but it ALWAYS comes up for answers like this! I might just have to dive in and give it a shot myself. I'd almost hate to have a game replace Railways for my train fix though.

This is a great game. Perfect with 2.

Also: any of the Crayon Rails games, and Steam has an expansion with a 2-player map that's fantastic.

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

You could take a look at
Empire Builder Rail Games
The most basic one is Empire Builder
But they have many different countries and even sci-fi and fantasy settings.

Trains: Rising Sun
While the original was best at 4 players, This standalone expansion comes with maps designed specifically for two players. You need to like deck builders like Dominion though as it it is essentially Dominion with trains.

Russian Railroads and First Train to Nuremberg look great. I think one of them will do great. I'll see which one the wife wants.

Another suggestion for crayon rail games. I had an old copy of Eurorails that I taught my girlfriend and it was her gateway into this wonderful hobby. They really do play great with 2 players.

If PnP is not a problem:

Ride the Rail, a co-operative game for 2.
