It appears it is still on the 1st edition. With the expansion coming soon (Embers of a Forsaken Star), is there news or rumors of a new edition?

Cody has said that he has no intentions of updating the base game (currently anyway) as he wants to keep everyone on the same page.

Of course the expansion does adjust some of the base game rules.

There is certainly no imminent danger of a new edition coming anytime soon, certainly not in the next 12 months.

I honestly believe that the creator has no intention of making a second edition, but I could see that changing in 3-5 years or longer.

The game can be reprinted forever, there is currently no reason for there to even be a 2nd edition.

Well, technically any copy of the game that you can buy right now is the 2nd edition (2nd printing, whatever you want to call it). The original first editions were only available from the original Kickstarter. The only change between the original and the current version though was to make the player boards slightly thinner to compensate for a problem with them warping over time, so there is nothing to worry about.

The Second Edition of a game is not the same thing as a Second Printing of a game.

Many games go through many, many printings without ever receiving a Second Edition. Also, there are times where a publisher may make small changes (error corrections, etc) between printings without it being considered a Second Edition. A Second Edition will generally have major changes to the game system such as with Mansions of Madness or Descent.
