Here is the start setup for northern forces. There you have the Japanese 18th division facing Stilwell's Chinese divisions and his US special forces (Galahad) and engineers.

Both players have four Phase Chits each that are drawn randomly: Assault (movement and "overrun"); Attack; Supply Check; Reinforcement. Both players start with their Assault chits at the start of the game, and Japan goes first.

After both players have played their Assault chits, the positions may look like this. Japan does no assault combat since they want to conserve their forces. US may do no Assault combat due to lack of supply (Chinese warlords stole a lot of it). The Air support unit on the map is just there to show where the Allied played wishes to do their coming attack (when he/she draws the attack chit)

The transporters (HQ and mules) have a supply range printed on them showing their range in movement points. The Transporters have been positioned so that all units will be in supply in case the Supply Check chit is drawn.
