We have a thread about games with art that keeps you from buying it. But, what about games you purchase and enjoy playing in spite of the art.

Legendary Encounters: A Firefly Deck Building Game has some terrible art design...

Not only is the art very inconsistent...

...but, when it's bad, it's really bad.

Even the art across an individual character is inconsistent. Behold the many faces of Wash.

Yikes! Right?

But, I'm a fan of the Legendary Encounters games. I'm also a fan of Firefly. And, originally on seeing the art I thought, "Well, I can skip that game. It looks awful, and if it's mostly just a re-theme of Aliens or Predator, then there's no need to get it." Then I read the reviews that brought attention to the new gameplay and how fun the game is.

So, when a (somewhat) recent B&N coupon allowed me to pick up the game for a decent price, I did. Having played it multiple times, I really like the game. I think the gameplay is slightly better than Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game. I find myself returning to play the game regularly despite how awful most of the art is.

Are there games that you find yourself playing regularly despite disliking the art or graphic design? If so, what are they?

Also, pics are always a plus.

Probably Dominion, or maybe Eclipse (not an ugly overall design, but those portraits...)

That's mine as well. Though Sentinels of the Universe is a close second, but only if we count app versions. Not keen on the tracking issues of the physical version.

Dominion is my second favourite game. It has for me, the worst card back of possibly all my games. I hate the logo!

I think the art is a bit all over the place. Some is not bad I think, some is poor.

In the pic below you can see the horrible card back (left) and my favourite front face art (right ) tee hee.

Lords of Vegas is one of my favorite games despite the art being very busy and unappealing to my eyes. Enough that I will call that out to people I'm introducing to the game.

I'd say Castles of Burgundy. Not that it's straight up ugly but it's just so bland and soulless - but despite this, it's one of my favorite 3 games.

If I had seen the rulebook before I bought it I would definetely had second thoughts about The King's Armory . A lot of the drawing is very well done but the perspective, the proportions and the HORRIBLE FACES hurts my eyes.

As a practical matter, I find artwork tends to result in a binary decision for me - there are games I've not bought or not played because the artwork bothers me. But so long as that's avoided - it's all good. Some might be better, some worse, and if there are multiple editions I likely have a preference, but the key element is whether the art is bad enough for me to avoid the game.

For example - I prefer the first edition artwork for Flaschenteufel:

I'm perfectly happy to play with the second edition artwork:

But I will not play the game with the third edition artwork:

On its blandness, its weird. While the theme is barely visible its more there for me than the theme of Orleans, but I don't find Orleans nearly as dry. I enjoy Castles, and most times my husband wants to play it I will do happily, but... There's more moisture in the Forbidden Desert Mirage tile than it.

Hermagor is one ugly game all around - the Box AND the board. Many of the components are equally nauseating. But man, I DO LOVE THAT GAME!!! If this game ever gets a reprint, I hope they change the aesthetics but don't mess with the gameplay.

I was going to say Legendary Firefly, but since that's already taken...

Project: ELITE is not exactly a pretty game, from the infamous blobby miniatures to the somewhat questionable art design, but it is rather fun to play. Fortunately, in a real-time game you don't get a ton of time to contemplate the art decisions.

I came to the thread thinking The Castles of Burgundy. But also, I enjoy Glory to Rome, and I'd play it even with the super ugly edition.

First off, What are these games? (So I can avoid them )

Second, I'll put in a vote for Innovation (first edition).

I'm almost always up for a play of Innovation, but the cards are very bland, especially the backs. My understanding is that all of the art has been updated for subsequent printings and that the Deluxe version coming soon should be a nice upgrade.

Cover art is great, but does not translate to the board:

That's Mystic War, Chill:Black Morn Manor and Starship Troopers from '76.

ST is an excellent hex and counter game.

Chill is actually pretty good, but the quality of components make it pretty unplayable a few decades later as they just were not made to last.
