I solve all the categorization problems by creating a game definition algorithm. It's the order that you define the games that makes definitions work.

Is it a light/casual/party game (Throw it far away).
Is it an abstract? (Themeless or near themeless, two player (edit: USUALLY), luckless or near luckless).
Is it a wargame? (Military simulation of some sort.)
Is it a coop? (Cuz we know that these look like).
Is it 18xx? (Brain hurty train game.)
Is it a Euro? (Low on luck, high on thinky strategy).
Is it Euro'y, but with a bit too many dudes on the map or luck? Call it a Hybrid.
Is it Ameritrash? (Dudes on a map! Randomness!)
Is it Thematic (Stacks of chits and cards on a board! Zombies, shoggoth, whatever! Randomness!)

So I don't call Terraforming Mars Thematic, even though it has plenty of theme, because the Euro question comes first in my algorithm. (Actually, given the random card deck I might call it a Hybrid.) Likewise, the Gallerist or any other heavily themed strategy games are also Euros. Polis or Stronghold are both wargames in my book because the wargame question comes first, even though they both have Euro elements.

Problem solved. You're welcome.

I will try this!
The game: Lords of Waterdeep

Is it a light/casual/party game (Throw it far away). NO

Is it an abstract? (Themeless or near themeless, two player, luckless or near luckless). NO

Is it a wargame? (Military simulation of some sort.) NO

Is it a coop? (Cuz we know that these look like). NO

Is it 18xx? (Brain hurty train game.) NO

Is it a Euro? (Low on luck, high on thinky strategy). UMMMMM....

Is it Euro'y, but with a bit too many dudes on the map or luck? Call it a Hybrid. Kind of...

Is it Ameritrash? (Dudes on a map! Randomness!) NO

Is it Thematic (Stacks of chits and cards on a board! Zombies, shoggoth, whatever! Randomness!) NO

So, Lords of Waterdeep is a Euro'y type game with slight bits of luck/randomness (choosing from drawn then displayed quest cards and drawn Intrigue cards).

Yes?

A brilliant taxonomic key, with the exception that randomness can't really be used to distinguish euros from non-euros. There are too many solid euros that use cards and other randomization mechanics to create variation and tension for this to be useful.

Also, degree of theme doesn't mean much either, for the same reason.

The question I would ask for "Is it a euro?": is the game primarily about thinking and strategy, or is it primarily about role playing and experiencing a story? Your Euro'y category is then going to be games that fall about 50/50 on that question.

Of course, you have to add in a final catch-all to avoid errors:

Ok, let's try this with Kremlin.

No. Well, my group consider it reasonably light but we're outliers.

No. It has a theme.

Nope.

Decidedly not.

No.

Well, there is strategy involved, but far too much randomness to be a Euro.

It's got too much randomness to be a hybrid either. And is far too directly confrontational. And you can be out of the running before the first round. Yeah, not a hybrid.

Randomness, but no dudes on a map. Which you claim to be a deciding factor of Ameritrash, so it can't be that.

Well, it has influence markers and cards. But I'm pretty sure Cold War Russia doesn't count as "zombies, shoggoth whatever". So we need to move onto the next categor...

Oh dear. I seem to have broken your algorithm already.

Communist commissars are clearly 'whatevers'. Case solved; Kremlin is a Thematic game.

You're welcome.
