A look at the names of the historical monarchs of England throws up a certain lack of variety - Georges, Edwards and Henrys abound. But what if possible heirs, whose premature deaths lessened their impact on history, had survived? What if heirs that lived had died, paving the way for more extreme relations to come to the fore?

This is a list of some of the names given to the children of monarchs that could have inherited the throne and could possibly have cheered up the lists of Kings.

Note that this assumes that they would actually use their given name and not just chose one (right, Chas?). Also I've not included female or illegitimate offspring (King Fulk anyone?)

Alphonso
Lionel
Humphrey
Arthur
Ernest
Adolphus
Octavius
Eustace

Arthur has been a particularly unlucky name for British heirs to the the throne. Scottish throne as well as English. I would be surprised if we see another one.

The current Prince of Wales will almost certainly take the names George VII.

Too Irish for an English king.

I despise the monarchy, and consider them nothing more than the country's biggest benefit scroungers.

Having said that however, I would definitely follow King Humphrey into battle.

Fortunately, you are completely unrepresentative of our country. Given we have to have a Head of State, a constitutional monarch is the best solution. If you think a President would cost the country less you are deluded - the monarch is cheap as chips.

Also fortunately you are perfectly within your rights to hold and express whatever opinion you like, short of hate crime.

You can't have a Bubba the 1st until you have a Bubba the 2nd.

Queen Elizabeth (1533-1603) spent nearly 350 years being the Queen Elizabeth - until 1952 when she became Queen Elizabeth 1st. Think of the book revisions that must have gone on after that.

And this is without getting into the numbering of our Kings and Queen's post the Union of the Crowns with Scotland in 1603 in the body of James VI (of Scotland) but James I of England.

To some that means that our current monarch should similarly be termed Queen Elizabeth in Scotland, as England's Queen Elizabeth I immediately predated the Union of the Crowns. The Act of Union in 1706 however adopted the practical step of using English nomenclature henceforth.

Should Scotland become independent however and retain the monarchy then it is possible she would be renumbered/have the number deleted for her Scottish throne.

Hopefully this will never happen.

Which country is that, Scotland or England? whistle

You'll find there are more republicans here than you think. Just because we are usually fairly quiet, doesn't mean that we don't exist in large numbers.

We've been here in large numbers since Charles I plunged the country into civil war. Of course, there's less need to pipe up when the monarch is not a deranged maniac like old Charlie was. And speaking of deranged maniacs called Charles...just you wait until he becomes king and you'll see how strong republican sentiment really is.

Keep dreaming your Republican dreams.

Generally the worst regarded Princes of Wales have turned out to be the best Monarchs and visa versa. Think Edward VII and Edward VIII - both darlings of society and terrible Kings.

King George VII will do fine, I suspect.
