For an Oust-like experience with reduced counting, the size of a group could be defined in more coarse-grained ways, like these:

a) Size of the smallest rectangle in which the group fits, i.e. product of the number of columns and the number of rows that it spans.

b) Sum of the width and height of the smallest rectangle in which the group fits.

c) Length of the larger side of the smallest rectangle in which the group fits.

d) Length of the larger side of the smallest rectangle in which the group fits, with the provision that the length of the smaller side is used to break ties. Extending the smaller side also counts as growing the group.

e) Length of the shorter side of the smallest rectangle in which the group fits.

f) Length of the shorter side of the smallest rectangle in which the group fits, with the provision that the length of the larger side is used to break ties. Extending the smaller side also counts as growing the group.

g) Same as variants 'a' to 'f', but applied to the largest solid rectangle of stones contained in the group.

h) Length of the longest straight orthogonal line of stones in the group.

i) Length of the longest straight orthogonal or diagonal line of stones in the group.

Of course, a group is said to "grow" when its size as per the chosen definition is increased, and the definitions involving rectangles are best applied on square boards. In some of the variants, the board can fill up without either player having wiped out the other, in which case the winner will be whoever has more stones on the board at that point.
