The BGG description for Minimize reports, "It should be mentioned that it seems to work on square grids as well, and some people even prefer it that way."

I'm curious: on a square-grid do diagonally adjacent stones belong to the same group? Or are orthogonal connections the only connections recognized?

When I play that variant with simple and Liberte, only orthogonal connections are recognized. With that restriction, the game plays out much more similar to the normal minimize, except that it's quite a bit easier to force the creation of small opponent groups, especially in the center of the board (and also things get really complicated when the board becomes locally checkerboard-like). As such, the variant has a somewhat more "intense" feel. We can't really recognize diagonal connections, because it'd be near impossible to force the creation of small groups of your opponent's color.

Also a thing to note: in order to maintain the nice drawless property of Minimize, the variant should be played on an odd x odd dimension grid.
