Here I Stand is a 6-player game that can be played 2-player using a 2-player diplomacy deck. I have not played the game but I have heard good things about it.

Age of Empires III is a 2-5 player game that plays 6 if you get another set of pieces. I have enjoyed my plays with 2 players and 5 players.

these are the ones I have and enjoyed both with just 2 and up to 6 that are greater than 2.5 game weight:

Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia

Lords of Waterdeep

Keyflower

also Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game -I haven't actually played this with less than four myself, however it can even be played solo apparently, I *have* played it with 6 even though it only lists up to five, I just used the extra blank cards for an additional base hand, there's enough of everything else, worked great for us

Or just get Empires: Age of Discovery deluxe and it comes with the Builders expansion and pieces for 6 players. Just picked this up recently and am loving it as a 2 player game, but can't wait to play with more!

Dominant Species

Plays perfectly well with all player counts. If you want the tight board with 2p just play multiple animals (official variant in the rulebook).

Cheers

+1 Viticulture Essential Edition - I haven't played with 2 but it can go long with 6 players. Probably not so bad once everyone is familiar with it.

I would say Parade but it is probably lighter than you'd prefer.

These are all medium/heavy 5 player games which are excellent with 2:

The Manhattan Project;
Barbarossa;
Yedo;
Stockpile (for me, this is a medium light game);
Eclipse with Eclipse: Rise of the Ancients expansion, or the game will be boring;
Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition);
Core Worlds;
Fury of Dracula (third edition);
Agricola; and
Concordia.

Keyflower is one of my favorite games with 3-6.
Keyflower: The Merchants Expansion makes it one of my favorites with 2-6.

This. I actually prefer Whitechapel with 2!

I'd also suggest Agricola (pre-2016 edition) and The Staufer Dynasty, both great 5 player games that scale down nicely.

As many have mentioned, already, Keyflower works well at all player counts (it does take quite long with 5-6 players, tho) from 2 to 6.

Another crowd favorite is Race for the Galaxy (requires expansions to work with more than 4), which also works great at all player counts.

The same (though it only goes up to 5) is true for Roll for the Galaxy, though I definitely prefer Race with just 2 players. Race is also a bit meatier, while Roll is more accessible to new players.

Bye

Keyflower -maintains heart and spite at 2p, fantastic. I won't recommend either expansion with 2, as they primarily serve to make the game wider/less competitive (merchants especially), the base game is where it is strongest.

Dominant species, playing any number of species, very different games depending how you choose. The game if at its best with a full table (6).

For AoE III wife likes it with 2 but really it is far too open for me to consider interesting.

Need to teach her here I stand before a con so will be trying 2p

I played a two player game of Fairy Tale this week. It's a game I like but I usually play it with four or five people. I found I still like the game with two players but it has a very different game play.

In a five player game, you're playing the odds of the deck. You're dealt five cards and once you draft one of them, you're not going to see the other four again. And every hand that is passed to you will be new cards you haven't seen before.

In a two player game, you're playing against the other player. You're going to be passing your hands back and forth between you and you're going to end up with three of the cards that you were originally dealt. And after the first exchange you know all of the cards that are out there except one and what you're trying to predict is which ones your opponent will choose.

Between Two Cities -- it plays differently with two than with 3-7 players, but it's still an excellent 2-player game. There is also a solitaire variant included in the rules.

Caylus - plays up to 5, plays solidly with 2, game weight 3.82 should qualify as medium-heavy.

Race for the Galaxy (needs expansions #1, #4 or #5 for 5 players and expansions #1 and #2 for 6 players)
7 Wonders (there are people who don't like the original 7 Wonders with 2 players that much, but there are also many who think it is fine, I among them - you'd have to decide for yourself)
Scythe (needs Scythe: Invaders from Afar for 6-7 players)
