when I was a small child in the 80s we had a strategy board game based around drilling for oil. All I remember is that I think it was map based and you claimed drilling sites by placing these little plastic derricks. Any ideas?
It's pretty Monopoly-like, buying sets of "oil leases" to get permission to drill an area; but the board hides blocks that slide randomly under the board--you shake it before play. The black derrick on the center of the board in the picture measures how deep you can "drill" through small holes in the board. You put the colored pumps to mark the depth, and the combined depth corresponds to the rent of Monopoly.
