Me and the wife used to play an Amstrad game called stockmarket years ago, and i was wondering whether there was a board game that trades in stocks

used to have to buy and sell stocks as the price went up and down, pretty standard fare

any recommendations?

Stockpile

It's fairly simplistic, but it is easy to learn and plays fast. It is playable with 2, but I have never tried it that way.

Stockpile plays very well with two. I highly recommend it if you're looking for an auction game with a strong stock market flavor. The expansion is also good and adds Bond cards, which lets you choose whether you want risky-but-usually-better stocks or reliable bonds for a nice bit of realism.

If you're looking for more of a stock market simulator, though, it might not fit the bill. Most of the interesting decisions in the game revolve around making the groups of stock cards for the auction and bidding on them.

Buy Low Sell High is another easy-playing one. Nice game that you can buy low now.

An entry in BGG for a commercial Sid Sackson game also shows its origins as a game with ordinary cards

Card Stock Market/Black Monday

A quote from the BGG description

The rules of the game were published in the book Card Games Around the World. One needs two standard decks of cards, something to denote the rate board for stock payouts (available in the file section for this game entry) and play money to play this version of the game.

I am going to disagree on Acquire. Not because it isn't a good game, but because it's not really a stock market game. You can buy shares, but you can only sell them in specific circumstances and most of the action is centered on getting companies to merge.

+1 Stockpile which my wife and I have played several times with only two, and we enjoyed it.

If you're looking for something similar to the game you mentioned in the OP, you might check out Speculation by Dirk Henn, creator of Alhambra.

One caveat with this one is that it's 3-6 players, but it really does stick closely to the buy low-sell high style of stock market game.
