I thought getting a smuggler per turn would be good to build up an income

Would it be the research technologies are similar value so it would be
good to first get a trade good to build up an income?

I think the game is too new for players to have assessed a good opening move, but if it's anything like Empires: Age of Discovery, your opening move will be determined by your position in the player order, and how many players there are in the game. IMO, it's never bad to grab a specialist with your first action, but if there's an especially juicy Tech available and you're first, you may want to grab that instead.

Which specialist to grab first? I would think either Smuggler or Scientist, as they can get you a limited resource (Trade Route token/Science cube) from a planet next turn. But that's just my thought. After a few plays I might change my mind.

First game with E:GR and I was able to secure a 4 of a kind by the second turn by using a smuggler gained on first turn, this was my income until epoch 2 and trade fleet tech.

This is an excellent use of an early specialist.

Some of techs get you more value by being out earlier I would not delay on getting techs too long. I was able to get 2 techs each epoch with the income listed above.
