I am curious why, in the era of ratings inflation, this one is what it is.

Is it that the game is well crafted, but not novel? Too 'simple' for the BGG glitterati?

Something else?

That, and you are assuming that there is across the board rating inflation. It is pretty easy to disprove that, just look at the BGG top 50 stats geeklist and you'll see many games are down from their all time high, and that puerto rico still holds the highest all time geek rating despite falling to 6th.

Cult of the new may be inflating certain games rating higher faster, but it isn't across the board.

Is 7 considered a bad rating now? many of the games in the top 100 are only around 7.5 and the top 10 are only 8 - 8.5 .

Certainly not by me. Anything above 6.5 with 100+ votes is a very respectable rating.
