I don't know if anyone else has experience this, but during February we opened

Operations Specialist
and in March we opened another

Operations Specialist

It was only through checking the forums for some rule clarifications that I saw people mention the

Quarantine Specialist

I've written to ZMan asking them for a replacement.

Have people found the

pretty essential, or have you been able to do without?

We had our first loss yesterday in April with one character taking 2 scars. Looking forward to reassigning roles!

Useful, but not essential.

Although we have just failed September for the second time, and the QS would have been a real help!! lol.

Absolutely essential, not only as a gameplay addition, but more often than not, to the story itself.
It is very likely that you are playing a completely different game (I'd say A LOT MORE DIFFICULT) and with a completely different story if you play without it.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've found an image online which I've printed out and will take to the table this evening.

For reasons you've doubtless discovered by now, we were using the Quarantine Specialist quite a bit in the months you're playing. They weren't essential, but they were very useful.

It's good you've printed a proxy so you at least have the choice of playing them.

QS is a very strong role. Just print a proxy and write on the upgrades / scars / relationships, and make a note next to the original stickers not to use those either. When you get your replacement you can move the stickers over.

I've played the game twice and, surprisingly enough, we only used the Quarantine Specialist once, and late into the game at that. Instead, we had our Researcher take over for her thanks to a couple of useful upgrades and the Co-workers relationship with the Scientist, which allowed her to sit pretty at the hot zone, flinging quarantines left and right all day and e-mailing research to her co-worker at her leisure.

The second time around, the Quarantine Specialist was used from her introduction and was, predictably, a life-saver. Still, it was admirable how there were two totally different ways to fill the same role.

We found the quarantine specialist to be the strongest character, because for the first few months after getting her, there's not much you can do other than quarantine for certain parts of the board.

This was also our impression having played up to May. QS and Scientist are the two roles we always want on the board, and I'm having second thoughts about the Scientist (But ours is Co-worker with the QS, so using that ability when the QS is stuck putting out fires in "CoDA" cities, thus having no use for cards, is great).
